  • 1.  Ghost hangs on SAS (serial attached SCSI) system

    Posted Jun 20, 2007 04:25 PM
I have used Ghost boot floppies and CDs for year, but am no 'expert'.  I have some new IBM 6218 Intellistations.  I have a CD that will boot and work with those that have Serial IDE type drives.  I have a slightly different model that has a Serial Attached SCSI drive.  Using the same boot disk on this machine causes it to hang.  The Ghost program and drive image is on a mapped network drive.  The drive mapping is working and the Ghost program tries to start.  The Ghost screen starts to display with the background, but then stops before showing any text.

During the system POST, I can see the Adaptec SCSI bios loading.  It puts up the number 1549, like that is the controller number, but Adaptec has no controller by that number on their web site.

I have tried the -fni and the -fnx switches.  The results are the same.  My version is 11, from the SGSS 2.0 package.

    Thanks,
    Dan

    Hi Dan,

It is unlikely to be the SAS device, most probably if Ghost cannot identify the card it won't show the disk rather than hanging.

There is a more common issue with some machines when Ghost try to find the USB devices. Could you try with -nousb switch?

However, with my IBM and DELL machines, I get a much better performance when used Ghost32 under WinPE. Since you use a CD, that's something you can try too.

I tried the -nousb switch and no change.  While I was using the latest version of Ghost, my boot CD was somewhat older.  I went through the boot disk wizard and created a new boot CD.  It did work, so I am operational now.  I still have to mess with the NIC driver settings because I am only getting 100mb/s.

I will study up on the PXE.  That does sound like a better method.  I am still doing what I did with Ghost7, so I am behind.  Too much to do in other areas, to say current.

    Thanks,
    Dan

    Hi Dan,

Certainly, PXE will help you a lot since you do not have to carry the CDs around.

Give a try with PE/Ghost32, probably it will give you much better speeds.
