  • 1.  GSS and re-registering of programs controlling instruments

    Posted Jan 20, 2016 10:50 PM

    Hi,

Our (PC running Win XP) in our factory is controlling various valves, motors, and sensors.

We are worried that if one day PC crashes, our operation will stop.

Will Symantec Ghost SS (v3.0) be able to prevent this and all the instruments (valves, motors, pumps etc.)  controlled by the PC can run like before without re-installing and re-registering them?

    Thanks!

The tile is cutoff. It is supposed to be:

There is no magic bullet. This depends on,

    1) The license agreements for the control software

    2)  Whether the software in question has license protection in-built that's designed to detect if it's been deployed in a 're-image' scenario

Some control software will allow re-imaging in a DR (disaster recovery) scenario, others will require that you re-input your license key, but sometimes you can be forced to completely re-register the license. It just depends on the software. And whilst you can often 'cheat' the licensing with a little know-how, you will almost certainly be in violation of the license terms if you do.

You have to inventory each of these critical pieces of software, check their license conditions, and licensing process. Then form a DR process accordingly, which may if you are lucky mean that you can simply re-image the computer with a DR ghost backup image of that machine.

    Kind Regards,
    Ian./

Ian is correct, and the ability of an image to restore and work 100% may additionally depend on the extent to which your hardware is modified. Many bespoke software packages bind their license to hardware specific parameters such as the bios serial number, the processor step number, the amount of memory and the size and model of the hard disk. So a small change such as a replacement hard disk **may** fall within the allowed system changes without requiring re-licensing, but only the vendor of the software can tell you this for certain.  If you need to replace the entire PC, you are likely to run into licensing issues, even after you have resolved any new driver requirements if the replacement machine is not 100% identical to the failed machine.  There is no shortcut - you will have to check every bit of software with each vendor and prepare a DR plan.

@Ian and Ed: Thanks for your inputs. It confirmed what I suspected at first (and hoped I was wrong!) that there is no shortcut for this and I must check each program and their licensing conditions individually.....
