  • 1.  GSS2-Can install client-Client does not appear in console-Client trying to locate server?

    Posted May 16, 2007 07:36 PM
Please excuse if this is a simplistic issue.  I have been unable to locate anything on this board or in the documentation that matches my queries.

Server upgraded from GSS1 to GSS2.  The GSS1 server had never been operational.  It had only been licensed.

Server has been updated using live update and reports that all Symantec software is current.  System was restarted after updates.

Server is able to remotely install the client software.  Client has been restarted and shows red x on icon in system tray.  Log says "Trying to locate apps-av"

Server log has a puzzling line "My computer name is apps\-av" in it.  I am not sure why the "\" is inserted in the computer name that the ngserver log is writing.

I can not seem to find anything in the documentation that references a ghost server name and there is nothing in the registry.

Workstation firewall is disabled; running XP Pro sp2 with all updates.  Server running 2003R2 SP2 with all current updates.

    I would appreciate any help!

    Thanks

    Hi,

The '\' character before '-' is just a esc charachter before an special character. It is not going to interfere in any way. Since you install the client remotely, it will copy the correct certificates for client to find the server.

Client firewall is a lesser problem since the message is originated from the client. Outgoing messages are not blocked by default, and the reply to that message will be allowed in.  But the server firewall could affect more, but when you install Ghost, it will add the exception to Windows firewall. However, if you use a different fw product you need to add the exception.

Client try multicast, WINS and broadcast to find the client, in that order. If the server and client are in different subnets, and if the multicasting is turned off it will not be able to find the server. What is the connection between server and client?

    Thanks for your clarification.

After working on this today; I found that the server running Ghost Console did not have the WINS server ip addresses set.  As soon as I added the WINS server ip addresses the server started to locate the remotely installed clients.

I downloaded a software package called ssmping which when installed as a client and server on two workstations in the same building shows that there are unicast and multicast communications.  When I installed the server portion on the Ghost Server and ran the client piece on the remote workstation all of the communication packets were displayed as unicast.

I must apologize again for my limited knowledge, but, this indicates to me that the multicast functionality may not be working or is blocked by our network electronics.?.?

    Is this reasonable to assume?

    Hi Whitney,

I think you have done a really nice job by identifying the issue :-)

Console registers itself in WINS for the clients to find it. If the WINS IP is not in the Console, it will not be able to register and clients will not be able to find the Console.

You are correct to assume that multicasting is probably disabled in your routers. I think some routers disable multicast by default, and not many applications use them, so they are left that way.

You can do couple of other tasks to confirm this. Do a file transfer or image deployment using default settings and it will not work if the multicasting is not available. But if you select unicast in the network tab, same tasks should work.
