I am new to working around the Alitirs NS server settings.  Anyway I have been asked to get an inventory of all Dell products in my organization.  I have the Altiris Deployment Console 6.5 (Build 299) SP1, with NS 6.  I have gotten to the part of the install that is asking me to upgrade the NS 6 to NS 7.  I need help on what to do next.  I don't think the NS 6 has been backed up in a while, but being new to Altiris I don't know how to back it up.  Anyway,

    • Will I loose anything if I say yes to upgrade NS 6 to NS 7?
    • Is this upgrade Free?
    • If I want to cancel it all together, how do I cancel the install? Will I loose any data in NS 6 if I cancel at this point?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Hi jflem69,
Can you explain why you need to go to DCM 3? It is based off the NS7 platform, which is a major change in architecture. I would stop the process right now and do some digging on this site and on http://altirigos.com to gauge whether NS7 is right for you at this time. Not all products are supported in NS7 yet, primarily only the Client Managemente Suite systems.
I'll try to address your questions...

    1) It is a MAJOR change, and many of the tables and dataclasses are changing. The migration procedure does move much of your data (and this is a highly simplified explanation) but you need to be prepared that not all legacy items will be supported.

    2) The upgrade is free, depending on what solutions you own. Notification Server is always free, as is Dell Client Manager Standard (and HP Client Manager). Client\Server Managent and Asset Management are not, although if you have a current AUP (Maintenance) aggreement, then you can upgrade without any additonal cost.

    3) You should be able to migrate, if you haven't continued past the point in questoin.

We are here to help, so feel free to ask more questions
