  • 1.  How to block P2P traffic

    Posted Sep 23, 2009 02:40 PM
Hello! I'm a fairly inexperienced network administrator. I run SEP 11.02 MR4 (downloading RU5, but waiting to install).

I just discovered that we have employees who have started to utilize torrents (utorrent to be exact) to download movies. It's not in my job description to deal with those employees, so while that goes through the proper channels, I would like to know if there is a way to use SEP to block P2P and torrent traffic. Reading on this forum, I know I could add "limewire" or "kazaa" or programs though application control. I'm wondering if there is a way to just block all P2P traffic period.

Please remember I am inexperienced, so if you are kind enough to reply, please give adequate explanation. Thanks!

    I have read that thread.

Using the information gathered, I have done the following:

    1. In Intrustion Prevention, I added exceptions blocking everything in the "Peer to Peer" category (except Skype).
    2. In Application & Device Control, I added a rule named "Torrent Block". I applied the rule to *.torrent and set to log only. Is that correct?

Given these two steps, is that all I need to do? Or am I missing something?

You can add Firewall rule as well as stated in the discussion

See "Comparison of BitTorrent clients" for a list of BitTorrent applications to block.
