The beta was closed a few days ago, and so chances are it's no longer available for download.  The links are still there in the post Jim linked to, but the files behind those links may have been taken down.

Is there a date for the availability of the 7.1 now that the Beta version is no more online? I first heard about december 2010 and now it would be March 2011.

March 2011 as the likely date. It is better to keep looking on the forums, as this date may change.

Closing the beta is a mistake, in my opinion. When Symantec released 7.0 it was the equivalent of Microsoft releasing Vista. Looks cool, works like crap. That turned a whole lot of people I know off of Altiris as a solution for management and allowed SCCM to gain ground (Microsoft is finally figuring out what they are doing wrong, it would seem). I was relying on 7.1 beta to be able to proactively keep my management assured that Altiris is the way to go (so keep paying for it). Pushing back the release date was bad enough although I'm told it was a good thing because it wasn't ready which really didn't help my case. Open betas allow for us Architects and Admins to keep up with the direction of the software and keep the check writers assured that this product is worth continuing to pay the AUP.

on a product as huge as altiris, i agree it needs a good long shaking-out period, but at some point they need to freeze the code and make it official, otherwise it's a mishmash of junk and even less organized.  that said, i think 4.5 months is a rather long time to go between closing the beta and releasing the "gold" version.  maybe they'll finish early and release in jan or feb instead?

I'm sorry, it was my understanding they closed it to the general public but are doing the next rev as a closed invite only beta. If that is not the case then I agree with you completely.

The closed beta is also over, but officially, input is still being accepted through the closed beta channel.

To be honest -not sure how worthwhile beta submissions are though -the codebase dev are now working in will be quite far removed from what we've been given.

However if anyone thinks something is worth raising through the closed beta channel, I'm happy for you to drop me a PM and we can do some test-debug and raise up accordingly. Thomas Baird on the forums also seems a receptive kind of chap ;-)

Try to do the usual though common sense stuff when submitting -gather logs, screenshots and steps to reproduce the issue. It will  save some 'wheel time'.
