  • 1.  How to install and configure Network Threat Protection (firewall) on Rackspace Cloud Server

We have a Windows 2008 R2 Rackspace cloud server currently running with windows firewall.  We had SEP (small Business) 12 running on dedicated servers at our previous location.  We cannot seem to get SEP to bind to the public IP address on the rackspace cloud server.

First boot after install, the interfaces won't come up.  Have to log in to java console and reboot once more.  This allows the could server to access the network interfaces again.  Network Threat Protection looks like its all hunky dory (sp) but when I test a rule (say disallow FTP) it has no effect !

    Can someone help?

For the rule, does anything show in the traffic log after being applied? What is the exact version here?

For networks using proxies it may be necessary to add Endpoint Protection URLs to the proxy whitelist. These are the servers contacted by Cloud Endpoint Protection Agents for different tasks:

Check this article: Internet access requirements

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO98461

    Management console browser access requirements

    • Cookies enabled
    • JavaScript enabled
    • SSL enabled
    • Firewall ports 80 and 443 permitted
    • Email address for user accounts, alerts, and reports

    See System requirements here: http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO98469

To my knowledge, there are no proxy servers involved.  THis is Rackspace and I beleive they use Citrix Xen to virtualize their machines.

I spun up a new rackspace cloud server.  It has only 1 public IP.  I was able to get SEP 12.0 to work on it!

I will attempt to install SEP again, on a multi-homed Cloud Server and see if I encounter difficulties (that was the scenario of my first install).

It could also be that I logged in to the Java Console after install (it may have allowed the install process to complete properly) whereas on the multi-homed system, I forced a reboot remotely...

I shall post my results here tomorrow.

I have confirmed I now have it working on several multi-homed rackspace cloud servers.  It is critical that instead of rebooting when you can't log in with RDP after the initial install that you log in with the "java" console from the rackspace control panel, sign in, and then do a reboot of the virutal machine.  Otherwise, the install does not seem to finish.

A small addendum - after succesfully installing SEP on the rackspace cloud server, rackspace backups would no longer work.  After lengthy debugging, it was determined that all the "offloading" for the Citrix PV Ethernet Adapters had to be disabled for the driveclient to work.  I also had noticed that FTP had slowed WAAAAAY down.  After disabling offloading, all worked well!   To do this, go to the adapter and click the advanced tab.  Change each proeprty that has the word "Offload" in it to disabled.

    Happy firewalling !
