  • 1.  How long to upgrade SEP 12.1 Manager from v11 ru6a (14Gb sem5)

    Posted Feb 15, 2012 10:41 AM

We are planning to upgrade our SEP 11 RU6a Managers to 12.1.  The sem5 SQL database is 14gb.

Has anyone upgraded to SEP 12.1 with a similar database size?

Can you help me out with time planning for this activity, by sharing your upgrade experince?

About how long should this upgrade take to complete?

    Thanks in advance

    Hi,

You can check by looking at following article, how upgrade will move.

    https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/articles/sep-11x-sep-121-upgrade-process-graphical-overview

Only catch would be that you might have to repaire/resynch your SQL database (sem5) because there would be schema changes in background after upgrade to SEP 12.1.

There is not any specifc time stamp to comment on same but I believe It should not take more than 30-45 mintues to complete upgrade process.

Prior to upgrade take a ncessary backups by following disaster recovery article.

Make sure that you go through every group in the console BEFORE you upgrade and remove any assigned packages. There is a bug going from 11.0.6300 to 12x that can remove the AV and NTP component from your clients after you upgrade the server if there is a package assigned with certain settings. The SEP framework will be left in place and you will still see the GUI in the taskbar w/ the green dot but you will not have any protection technologies installed.

We got bit by this and lost AV and NTP coverage on over 2,000 clients before we caught it. Originally tech support assured us it was a "cosmetic" flaw and our machines were protected but after several hours we convinced them otherwise. Finally a tech told us "I have internal documentation on this issue I wish I could share" and he advised is we were basically screwed and had to reinstall all 2,000+ clients.

There used to be a tech doc explaining the issue but I can no longer find it on their website. Good luck, v12 is a mess.
