There have been a ton of questions on how to migrate to the new Symantec Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition.
Probably the easiest way to remember this is the following:
    CROSSGRADE at RENEWAL.

For current customers on SAV CE, when you are up for renewal, simply use the cross grade sku to get SEP SBE.

Below is a great URL that gives a summary on migration paths as well as price impact:

I downloaded SEP, prerelease 12 and loved it, but when my 30 day eval was over, I called Symantec to license it, but they said only SEP v11 was available and I would have to uninstall v12 before I could install v11.  In fact several of the people I spoke with at Symantec hadn't even heard of v.12 so they were absolutely no help.

So now I'm stuck with v12 on 80 computers with expired trial licenses and I must uninstall SEP prerelease before I can install my licensed  v11.  But what is really irritating, is now I read on these forums that SEP v12 will not be an upgrade if you own v11, but is considered a different product?  Now I'm really ticked.

I just can't believe that these user forums provide more information than company employees.  I spoke with 5 people at symantec in licensing, sales, and tech support and they all gave me different info. Pricing was different, options....

But I wanted to see how it handled SEPv11.  So I setup 3 virtual machines:  Svr 2003, XP, and Vista.  I installed the full SEPv11 manager on the server and pushed out all 3 clients.  I then manually uninstalled the SEPv11 mananger and client off the server.  I then installed SEPSBEv12 trial on the server and pushed out the clients.  The SEPSBEv12 clients successfully installed over the SEPv11 clients on the XP and Vista virtual machines!  Sweet!   So from a technical standpoint, it looks like an upgrade will work.

I don't know about licensing...I am more than a little leary about so called crossgrade licensing.  The info coming from my salesperson is that going from SAV CE v10 to SEPv11 is an upgrade license and is much less expensive than going from SAV CE v10 or SEP v11 to SEPSBEv12, which according to her is not an upgrade license but a full retail price license - and is usually more than twice the price of an upgrade license!

    Hi drew and corIT

If you have SAV or SEP 11.0 and wish to move to SEP SBE 12.0. --- you can call customer care and request a license transfer... (there is no charge for a license trasfer).

This assumes you are current on SAV or SEP 11.0 maintenance.

If your renewal for SAV or SEP 11.0 is around the corner, then you can wait till your renewa date simply asked to be cross-graded to SEP SBE 12.0  so your licenses will be transferred to SEP SBE 12.0 (This way you will pay around the same price to renew SAV/SEP 11.x and move to SEP SBE 12.0). You should NOT have to pay the Upgrade for Full retaim price if you are current on SAV/SEP 11.x maintenance.

Drew, corIT  - this should work, if you have trouble let me know, I will contact you offline and I will walk your sales rep through this.

    Nimesh.

When our customers' renewal comes due, our sales staff has our customers buy the best costing product for the next year.  That has been the full SEPv11 which isn't really suited to small businesses.

Nimesh, please do contact me offline so that you can walk my sales rep through this.

    Thanks, Drew

I got the following directly from Symantec:

"Any customer that has SAV/SEP 11.x can be crossgraded to SEP SBE 12.0 at renewal time. If the customer is not up for renewal then they you can call customer care and have their license transfer at no cost. (note: this is true for customers with SAV/SEP 11.x)"

"... - my understanding is that most of your customers have purchased Multi-tier Protection [this is the full SEP Multitier ... see this]. The options here are
    • Cross-grade them at time of renewal to SPS Enterprise Edition (this means they will continue using SEP 11.x and not have access to SEP SBE 12.0)
    • Require a license transfer downgrade to SPS Small Business Edition (this will involve working with a Symantec sales rep and customer care). SPS SBE includes SEP SBE 12.0 product
    • Sell the customer new licenses of SPS SBE Promo (due to the 30% discount, the price is cheaper than Multi-tier renewal – thank you bringing it to my attention)."
