How to protect Windows Home Server?

  • 1.  How to protect Windows Home Server?

    Posted Dec 08, 2010 11:04 AM

On the one hand Home Server is reduced version of Windows Server, on the other hand - SEP doesn't support Home Server officially (or, maybe, I'm wrong?).

    2 questions then:

    1. How to protect Windows Home Server? if it is SEP - will it work properly on Home Server?
    2. How can end-user buy SEP? it is not being selled in stores.

    1. Home server is not on the list for supported operating systems. I have never tried to install it there.

    2. Why don't you want to try one of products like Norton Internet Security or Norton 360? They are really good.

It is not supported but may work. You are very limited with AV solutions that are supported on Windows Home Server. SEP is an Enterprise product, so you would need to talk with a Symanec sales or authorized Symantec reseller.  SEP 12 Small Business Edition is designed for smaller networks, but also lacks support for Windows Home Server.

You could always download the SEP 12 trial and see if it works for you.

All in all do you really need features provided by SEP? SEP is so good for large environments because it allows you to manage your clients from one central place. Except some advanced features that you are unlike to use at home such as Application and Device control, SEP has contains Antivirus and Firewall, etc. so quite regular features :-)

Your out of luck with Norton products. They do not support Windows Home Server.

    Microsoft® Windows® XP (32-bit) with Service Pack 2 or later Home/Professional/Media Center

    Microsoft® Windows Vista® (32-bit and 64-bit) Starter/Home Basic/Home Premium/Business /Ultimate

    Microsoft® Windows® 7 (32-bit and 64-bit) Starter/ Home Basic/Home Premium/Professional/Ultimate

    Minimum Hardware Requirements

    • 300 MHz or faster processor
    • 256 MB of RAM (512 MB recommended)
    • 300 MB of available hard disk space
    • Must meet minimum operating system requirements for Microsoft Windows XP/Vista/Win7
    • Internet Explorer® 6.0 or higher, or Mozilla Firefox® 3.0 or higher

    All mentions are appreciated.

The easiest way I see (from your suggestions) is to use trial version of Norton products. Will start with NIS as it has (on my experience) more posilities for fine tuning compared to Norton 360.

This is pity that there's no support on Home Server. I will consider this also when will be making final decision.

Never thought that Home Server is such a mystetious product in terms of security... Discussion is open so far.

For Windows Home Server Add-in information, including AV, check out the WHS Add-ins site from Microsoft.

I see no reasons anyway why Norton should not work on Home Server... Give it a try. And let us know! :-) Good luck!

I know you could use SEP on a home server, but you would need to modify the MSI with something like ORCA to remove the supported operating system check. This should allow SEP to install, however this would be completely unsupported so it's a "perform at your own risk" type of scenario as we at Symantec would not be able to assist in troubleshooting this type of install.

WHS is based on Windows Server 2003 SP2 so I'm doubting that any of the consumer products would be able to install as they do not support servers. Though I am not very familiar with editing any of the installation files for either NIS or N360, you may be able to perform something similar for those to install.

    Any news on this?

I just purchased an HP Media Smart EX490 from Costco.com with a free extra 1TB drive.  I also cracked it open and pulled the Celeron and dropped in an E6600 Dual Core 2.4Ghz processor I had in my lab.  It worked great, I set it up this weekend, but was sad to see only McAfee has an "add-in" for it.

Couldn't I just log into the WHS using remote desktop, and go download Norton Internet Security 2010 from a browser on the WHS and install it? My experience being that with Windows Server 2003 SP2, which is really built off of an XP base, is there really that much difference in the API that it would reject Norton? Or will Norton not install because it doesn't see a valid OS in it's approved list or fails to see a needed service running?

Just curious to see if anyone has gotten it to work.

No change, Norton has not added support for the WHS OS. Check in the Norton Community to see if anyone there has successfully run Norton on WHS.
