  • 1.  How to recover files created by ghost 7.5 - on 67 CDs !!!

I'm desperate!! -- My laptop crashed a week ago and I am back to a factory build - I wasn't able to run any of the manufacturer's rescue & recovery -- BUT - I was able to run an old copy of ghost 7.5 that I still had on a floppy--  I had no clue how to get it to write to a USB drive, so the .gho image is on 67 CD-R's  (YES- it was a miserable process!) --

I've finally gotten my laptop running again....... but have not figured out how to actually get at the files that are on the CDs - I could see the filenames as the image was being created, so I know that most of my data is actually there- need help as to how to copy them onto a hard drive so I can use them.  I don't need the whole image, but want to pull key files - I have enough disk space that I could load the whole 53MB and then pull what I need- but have no idea how to do it-

    thanks

    marm1ller,

You will need to save all of the files to your hard drive. Then you will need to use the Ghost Explorer to open the image and extract the files you need. You will need to have the Ghost Solution Suite installed, even the trial version will do. Once you have that, you can open Ghost Explorer, click File > Open and browse to your image. The image is large, so it will take several minutes to load, but then you will be able to browse to the files you need and extract them.

Alternatively you can use ghost to restore entire image to another hard disk and then copy files out. Problem with CDs is that files are named in a "special" CD format and are not the same as regular ghost hard disk backup convention. Of course you can copy one CD after the other to HD but you'll need to renamed every next segment to follow regular ghost naming convention, eg: image.gho, image001.ghs, image002.ghs, image003.ghs ...

It is ju t much simpler to restore using ghost.

    Randall,
Thank you so much for  your quick reply -- it was a perfect match for my situation.

I was able to download the trial program on the new build, and copy the CDs to a new folder on the hard drive....... (by the way, 60+ CDs takes about 15 hours to load -- the CDs copy at 9-11 minutes each....and you lose time swapping them all out-- so it was certainly tedious! - but it worked)

I was able to salvage most of my data.  I did lose my Notes mail and calendar files - those files must have been corrupted in the failure or were in the sectors damaged...hard to tell...but I'll be in the 'my dog ate it' mode for missed appointments in the next few weeks --

But I lost no real business files and none of my time records (for client billing!) - so this was a big help.....

Now.......maybe I'll do a better job of backup frequency if I can figure out some way to make it more automatic without being costly.....

    thanks again
