  • 1.  How to remove Bootgard from C drive

I am running Windows 10 and Symantec Encryption Desktop 10.3.2 MP13 Build 21495.

I used PGP Disk to encrypt one of my internal data drives.  This was not the C drive.

Once encryption finished, I rebooted my computer and somehow it installed Bootguard on my C drive and it brings up the PGP screen to enter the pw.  I can enter the passphrase successfully, but then it just hangs and will not proceed into Windows.

When I view "Advanced" from that screen, it says the drive is 0% encrpted but has pgpwde on it.

I was able to boot with an older Windws 10 C drive that didn't have Symantec Encryption Desktop on it and the drive with Bootguard was viewable in Windows Explorer just fine, without me entering any PGP passphrase.

However, if I boot from another Windows 10 C drive that has Symantec Encryption Desktop installed, it loads the "Unlock Disk Windows dialog boxx to enter the Passphrase to unlock the disk.  I enter that and can view the files successfully.

So this is some kind of bug and I am prevented from booting from my good Windows drive with my updated programs that I need to use.

Is there any way to remove the bootguard from the drive?  I tried some command line functions from:

    https://support.symantec.com/en_US/article.TECH148944.html

and doesn't work.  Those tell me that "Disk 0 is instrumented by Bootguard" but when I try remove it, it says "Error Code –11973: resources unavailable" or gives me another error.  And each time I try to check Disk 1 or 2, it still says Disk 0.

This is very frustrating and any help would be greately appreciated. Thank you.

Ok I was able to fix it.  I used:

    Decrypting from a Command Line

    1. From the command line, type pgpwde --decrypt --disk 0 (or the disk in question) --passphrase"enter passphrase here within double quotes" and press the Enter key. The disk will then decrypt and the PGP Tray icon displays in the system tray to show you decryption is in progress.

And it worked correctly this time.

For anyone else who has this problem, the one part that was wrong in the instructions is that pgpwde files are located in WinPE folder in the PGP folders in Program Files and not where the directions specify (one level up).
