  • 1.  How to remove eeCtrl: Symantec Eraser Control Driver?

    Posted Apr 09, 2009 02:19 PM
    Hi,

I uninstalled Symantec Corporate Edition 9 from a Win2003 R2 server over two years ago, in February 2007.

Yesterday, while trying to debug another A/V product, that vendor's support rep pointed out that the system is still running eeCtrl, the Symantec Eraser Control Driver, from C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\EENGINE.

I can find no pertinent refernces to eeCtrl.sys in the Symantec knowledge base.

Why is that driver still there and how do I get rid of it?

You can ask for cleanwipe from the vendor but probably you are not using SAV anymore.

Though not sure but see if this works

    1) Delete the file "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\EENGINE\eeCtrl.sys"
    2) Delete all instances that you find in the regitry pointing to the file.

You may delete the entire Symantec shared directory if you do not have any Symantec products installed on the server.

    Sandeep,

    Thank you for your reply.

I much prefer to use a tool than to go fiddling in the registry.

I called support on this a couple days ago but the dispatcher was unable to connect my call because my product is no longer covered under a support contract.

Today after reading another thread I tried MySupport and was able to submit an online case (#320-186-226). We'll see if that works.

Symantec really needs to provide unrestricted uninstallation support. It is all too common to find traces of supposedly uninstalled products. (I had another one yesterday that was fortunately solved with the Norton uninstaller.)

After initially refusing and marking the case as pending close, the support dept. sent me the CleanWipe link.

    Unfortunately CleanWipe 4.1 doesn't remove eeCtrl.sys.

I'm waiting to hear their suggestion.

Someone found this thread today and asked whether the issue was resolved.

I never heard back from support after telling them that CleanWipe doesn't remove eeCtrl.sys.

eeCtrl.sys is still on the server, but it is not mentioned in the registry. I don't remember at this point if I manually removed it from the registry.
