Image Create Task on Windows 7 x64 doesn't reboot client

    G'day,

I am evaluating Ghost Solution Suite and having an issue with Image Creation Tasks.

The Console is running on Windows XP.

I have successfully done remote Ghost Client installs on the Windows 7 x64 clients (had to disable the windows firewall to get that to work).

When I initiate an Image Creation Task on the client it brings up the popup box on the client saying that it's going to reboot to perform an administrative task, but when the countdown finishes, the popup disappears, and nothing happens. The windows firewall is still disabled and I've tried disabling all of the McAfee AV services as well but it doesn't make a difference.

I am using Symantec Ghost Console program version 11.5.1.2266. It's the trialware I just downloaded 2 days ago. I can't LiveUpdate it probably because it's still trialware, so I'm not sure if there's a later patch level I should be using.

    Anyone got any ideas?

    Hi,

Could you please confirm the task status on console side? Is there any error on console for this task? I suspect the NIC drivers are not present in driver database for this machine but that is just a guess. Please confirm.

The Task says In Progress, the GhostCast server opens with the session started. After a while the Task fails.

Why does it need NIC drivers in the database in order to reboot the client? I believe the Ghost Client is failing to reboot the system due to most likely a permission problem in Windows 7, but nothing seems to be logged on the client end. I have UAC disabled as well which would normally be the first thing I would suspect in this situation.

I can understand that it needs NIC drivers once it has rebooted, so it can connect to the GhostCast session, but it doesn't even try to reboot, just sits in Windows.

    Hi,

Ghost console checks all the pre-requistes before booting the client in to pre-os. It also checks the proper NIC drivers are listed in driver database and there should not be any issue while the client machine is in pre-os to communicate with the console server.

You mentioned "after a while the task fails". Could you please check what the error says. You can open the log from Console (View-->task log).

    Hi,

What you ask for is perfectly correct, but Ghost has a prerequisite check that needs to be made as Nitin has pointed out. It would not only look for the NIC but it would also look for the Mass Storage drivers too, just make sure that ghost is able to correctly look at the hard disk in the PreOS.  As Nitin says you could right click on the Task that has failed and check the event log. There it would say "TO VIRTUAL PARTITION" ... failed. You could right click on that and check the event details that would give us an insight into the drivers that need to be added. If you could look at it and get back to us we would be able to guide you. If you think you would have the VISTA driver for that NIC, then please find the links below which explain as to why you need the VISTA driver even though you are trying to image Windows 7 and also how we add the drivers to the WinPE boot package.

Thanks Venkat for point out for storage driver. Basically ghost ensures for NIC as well as storage drivers which are critial drivers to boot the machine.

Thanks guys, you are right, it is failing "To Virtual Partition" due to missing drivers for the NIC, Intel 82567LM-3 Gigabit Network Connection.

I will fix that problem and then let you know how it goes. =)

    Hi,

That is the exact error which I was looking for. Please add the vista drivers and check. I hope this will solve your problem.

I inserted the 82567LM3 driver into the WinPE 512 image, reinstalled the Ghost client onto the Win7 x64 desktop PC, then tried to do an image pull again.

It completed up to and including the To Virtual Partition step. But it didn't reboot the client. It sat there doing nothing for over an hour. Early on an error popped up on the client saying there had been a 'fatal error' with sysprep. Right now the Create image task is still running but it doesn't say what step it's on, the last entry in the log is Success on the To Virtual Partition step.

After an hour I manually rebooted the client PC to see if it would continue on and the client PC doesn't boot now, it comes up with an 'unable to load os' error, I guess because the WinPE environment is broken. I'm not sure how to resuscitate the client now without doing a reinstall (or at least repair) off the Win7 install disk.

So I'm going to do that and try to do image creation the old fashioned way, by booting using my own PXE boot image which works, and connecting to a ghostcast server.

I just moved to WinPE 3.0, and am having similar issues with a similar NIC - all new HP models have the 82577LM and 82577LC NIC.  I can PXE Boot to the console just fine with my modified WinPE image.  I can run the clone task from the console successfully, but if I include "configuration" in the task, it will clone the machine, go back to the console, disconnect and push down the configuration, and then reconnect to the console, and just wait - constantly indicating its connected to the console.  The task will eventually time out as it never makes it to the target OS.

When dealing with a machine that has always worked in PCDOS environment (HP dc7900) - when running a clone task on a system that is already in the OS and shows up in the console as connected, it updates the PreOS files, pushes the configuration, and then just waits for it to reboot into the virtual partition.  It never occurs.  What does happen though is the virtualpartion files on the root of C are there, the client disconnects from the console, and occasionally explorer or the system lock up.  But no reboot and the task times out.  Forcing a reboot doesn't work.  And once again, if you pushed configuration, it has already created the new machine account, but isn't re-imaged and doesn't re-connect, so each time the system comes back up after attempting a clone, it is now disconnected from the domain....

I updated the WinPE drivers in the Ghost Boot Wizard with Vista drivers before ever starting, and made sure the machines I'm working with have the proper PreOS client selected.  I've tried re-installing the client.  I've switched to PCDOS, performed a config refresh, switched to WinPE, did another refresh and tried again to no avail.  The task still just starts, gives the warning splash, pushes the virtualpart files to the root of C:\, and then just sits and times out - eventually the client and/or OS will hang.  On reboot the machine is off the domain (because in the configuration step it creates the new machine account).  Without configuration selected in the task, the machine just sits, client disconnects, and then task times out.  No domain disconnect, but system still ends up hanging with no reboot into virtualpartition.

Sounds like WinPE 3.0, the newest version of ghost, new NIC drivers, and simple reboot commands aren't working together in some fashion.  Any help would be much appreciated as WinPE is pretty much the only PreOS option anymore - none of our new hardware coming in has PCDOS compatible drivers anywhere to allow SATA imaging etc., and 2K8 R2 pretty much necessitates that we use WinPE for our environment.
