  • 1.  Images From Vendor Not SysPrepped (Is This A Problem for Agent?)

    Posted Jan 15, 2014 02:46 PM

    Hello,

We have about 200 machines that were imaged and setup by an outside vendor.  We discovered that these machines were not SysPrepped.

We are planning push the Altiris agent to all 200 machines.   Could this present a problem with duplicate GUIDs and give us a problem managing the machines?  If so, is there an easy fix or do all machines need to be reimaged?

We are running SMP 7.1 SP2

    Thanks for any guidance.

No, it shouldn't be a problem at all with the Altiris Agent, it creates it's own id (the GUID) when it's installed.

Although you'll have duplicate SID's (Security IDs) in each PC that's not a problem the way it was thought to be:

"machine SID duplication – having multiple computers with the same machine SID – doesn’t pose any problem, security or otherwise. I took my conclusion to the Windows security and deployment teams and no one could come up with a scenario where two systems with the same machine SID, whether in a Workgroup or a Domain, would cause an issue."

Very interesting about the Security SID.

Thanks for confirming that Altiris is not affected by this issue.  Being that we never had the agent installed and computer names are unique, things seem to be working.
