  • 1.  Install DS 6.9 on 7.1 hardware and site servers

Since DS 7.1 isn't quite there yet, though getting close. I would like to continue using DS 6.9 for a little longer. However, I don't want to have a second set of hardware out there just to support it. Is it possible to install DS6.9 on the same 64bit software that ITMS 7.1 is installed on? Same goes with the 7.1 site servers. Can they be shared with a remote DS 6.9 PXE site?

Yes, it will work, but I would recommend keeping these separate.  Keep in mind that down the line you'll be installing DS 7.1 on the NS 7.1 box that also hosts DS 6.9 SP5.  That's where it gets messy.  If you were eternally using DS 6.9 SP5 and NS 7.1 w/o DS 7.1, then I wouldn't have any hesitatations.  But this could make your upgrade process more complex.

You should be able to have a site server running task and package services and also functioning as a DS 6.9 PXE server.  Again, if you plan to make these site servers run the boot services later for DS 7.1, I'd suggest not making these the same -- or at least be aware that imaging will be unavailable during the transition from 6.9 to 7.1.

Like mclemson mentioned, this will be messy.

However if you really have to do this then in the end you will have 6.9 and 7.1 PXE services running on your box. Good thing is that You can notice the difference in services as on 7.1 we use SBS (symantec boot service) instead of PXE. Also on 7.1 SBS services are set to manual by default and atleast as long as you don't start these they will not interfere with 6.9 PXE, but after that like mentioned before ... it will get messy.
