InstalledProduct client inventory not working

  • 1.  InstalledProduct client inventory not working

The systems that have this issue have always had it. This group of computers all share the same base image. Other groups of computers that have been distributed with a different base image work fine.
I've upgraded to the newest version of GSS - 2.0.1. I've checked for the Symantec namespace under WMI Management and its there on all of the systems. InstalledProduct is setup to collect data.
What else should I be looking at to get the Installed Product Inventory to show up.

    Hi Antonio,

In order to understand a bit more about the problem you are having appreciate if you could give me few more details:
    1. What is the operating system that installed on these computers and how is it different from the other one that works for you?
    2. Do you manage to collect some of the InstalledProduct information or nothing at all?
    3. Can you collect Machine Information and any other hardware related information?

    Thank you for your patient.
    Orah

    1. Windows XP w/SP2 is installed on all of the systems. The difference between the ones that work and the ones that don't is that I created the base image that works and the base image for the ones that don't were created by someone who no longer works here.  Software is the same on all of the systems.
    2. Nothing is collected from the InstalledProduct information. I get "This machine has not data collected for this inventory veiw".
    3. I'm able to collect information from other inventory veiws; hardware related and software from the Product Inventory veiw.

    Thanks for helping

    Hi,

Just another clarification question: can you collect any data that specified by Symantec provider? Can you please check if you can view Ghost Enterprise version and Machine Information on one of the machines that do not display Installed products?

It will help me to isolate the problem.

    Cheers,

    Orah

I can view Ghost Enterprise Version.
Machine information is not available as an inventory view. It is set up  under collected data but  it  is not available for selection when setting the inventory view.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi,
First, I would like to point you to the creation of new Views. It is very useful feature since not all the data that is collected displayed by default. You can use views to customize information you want to be displayed. Please refer to "Creating Views" in Chapter 9 of Implementation guide for more details, if will guide you trough the creation process.
I also would like to ask you to run third party tool i.e. wbem to check the instances of the Install Product class. If some or all of the instances are not present it might point to the problem in dlls that were installed, therefore you might need to unregistered and register dll that you have problem with e.g. Install Product.
Please check that you have 3 dlls on your client machine: WmiInstalleProduct, WmiMachineInformation, WmiSymantecGhostEnterprise.
    Hope this will help.
    Orah

I was able to create a machine information view and was able to view the inventory for that view on all of the systems.
It does seems to be an issue with just InstalledProducts. I don't know of any wbem tools for WinXP besides the WMI diagnostic tool from Microsoft. I ran that tool and it ends stating the WMI is working correctly.
I unregisted and registered the WmiInstalledProduct dll but its still not working.

It seems that something blocking the information to be stored in database if it exists on your computer. Just one last thing that I would like you to do to eliminate the possibility that provider wasn't installed or partially installed. Can you please run in cmd: wbem, it will open the relevant root. Then run wbemtest.exe, it will open wmi tester. At this stage you need to "connect" and then specify the name space of the InstalledProduct, i.e. \\.\root\Symantec\SymantecGhost\Enterprise\Version1 then press Connect again and then click on Enum Instances and type: InstalledProduct and OK. If the provider correctly installed you should be able to view all the products that are installed on your computer.

I receive an error on the computers that don't show the installed products in the Ghost Console. On the other machines, the window is populated.
    The error is
    Number: 0x80041005
    Facility: WMI
    Description: Type mismatch

Hmmmm, it is very interesting. This error code can indicate that the pVal parameter points to a variant of an incorrect type, for class definitions, this is returned if the property already exists in the parent class, and the new COM type is different from the old COM type that can be caused by the fact the the older image had a previouse version of a ghost client that wasn't updated properly. So what I can suggest at this stage is to reinstall the ghost client. First try it with one of the computers and see if this will help.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling through the Ghost Console. It still failed.
I uninstalled Ghost Client using the Add/Remove Programs and reinstalling using the executable. It still failed.
Do you think trying a manual uninstall will help?

    Hi Antonio,

Sorry for delay but I was trying to understand what may cause this very unique outcome but was unable to reproduce it in any case. So I was just wondering if you can send me a log file from one of the machines that have this issue, so I'll be able to go through it and maybe find some hidden gems :).
Meantime I would suggest that you will use "Product" view, this provider should be able to give you the information you are looking for.

    Cheers,
    Orah

I have this same issue on 1000 Dell D520 Laptops with WIN XP. This was one of the big selling points I made to get this software purchased and it doesn't work. Help!

I tried the "Product" view. It does work on these computers, but it does have any information for some of the programs I am looking for. I can only find them on the computers that I can see the "Installed Product" view.
