  • 1.  Is it possible to run the Virtual Image Exception tool on an existing VM

    Posted May 01, 2017 01:18 PM

Article https://support.symantec.com/en_US/article.TECH172218.html talks about using the VIE tool on the base line image, before creating virtual machines from these images. However we have a VDI environment that is actively used by users that is facing serious performance issues and we would like to find out if its possible to use this VIE tool on each individual virtual machine. We are willing to take some downtime where a user will not be able to use their virtual machine.

Can we run the VIE tool on an existing virtual machine that has been previously created from a image.

Virtual machines are Win 7 machines.

    Thanks

As far as I remember, it should only be run on new/clean images due to changes that will inevitably happen afterwards once the user gets it. I supopse there is nothing stopping you from running it but personally I've not done this after the image has been deployed so I can't say what results will be.

You can use any machine you want.

As long as you remember that that machine is now your new 'gold' image.

I have installed the OS, all application that were required, all tools and utilities and all patches for that OS and those apps, etc, and then run VIE tool

And if your VM is infected with something, that will cause all other images to be infected as well... Like any normal cloning process.

And the question remains: do you actually gain that much by using the VIE tool?

Or do you prefer the security that comes by not using the VIE tool?

    Up to each individual.

    Just my $0.03
