  • 1.  ITMS 8.0 - Off-box SQL Upgrade from 2008 to 2014

    Posted Feb 16, 2017 06:54 AM

    Hi,

As part of LCM I was asked by our DBA if we could upgrade the SQL server hosting Altiris from SQL 2008 to 2014. Has anyone done this before? Anything special which needs to be considered doing such an upgrade?

According to this article SQL Server Express Edition Upgrade to SQL Server Standard and higher it seems straight forward, however this article describes the upgrade from Express to a higher edition.

    Any insight would be helpful.

    Thanks.

    Stefan

    Hi Stefan S.!

As far as I see, you have NS 8.0.x released version in your environment and according to support matrix of ITMS 8.0 release, SQL Server 2014 is supported.

    SQL SUPPORT FOR 8.0.jpg

Information from internet about SQL Server 2008 on-box upgrade to 2014 version:

    Notes:

    1. How SQL Server will be working with "Symantec_CMDB" database after SQL upgrade from 2008 to 2014 version, depends on how  SQL server upgrade will be completed but not from Notification Server side, since now you have working environment using SQL 2008.
    2. During SQL Server upgrade from 2008 to 2014 where "Symantec_CMDB" database is running, avoid big activities for NS and managed client computers, since SQL Server service will be unavailable sometime while SQL upgrades and sent NSE files from clients, tasks will be failed on NS side which can lead to lot of errors in NS log because of expected current 'no connection to database' while SQL is upgrading.

Believe that you have a "Symantec_CMDB" database backup and first will try to check this scenario on test environment.

    Thanks,

    IP.
