Hello, I am trying to find out how licensing works for Symantec Email Protect.  Does each user email address, distribution list, shared mailbox, etc. require a license to be purchased.  I believe we were told at one time that shared mailboxes, such as support@company.com and distribution lists, such as DL-All-Users@company.com would not require that a license be purchased.  We are now being told that any "user" in email protect does require a license.  Thanks!

    Hi Brian,

The licensing guide below should help you with this:

    THanks!

Sorry, but this does not answer the question.  I had already looked at the guide that you sent a link to.  It says a user is a person or device.  Our reseller is telling me that we have to purchase a license for every email address, which would include like any of our resource mailboxes like support@xyz.com or whatever.  We were told that we only had to buy a license for Email Protect for actual physical "users", so actual people.  I need clarification so that we can renew only the licenses that actually need.  Thanks!

    Hi Brian

As far as Symantec is concerned we view usage based on volume of mail rather than number of addresses.

One user could for example potentnially have 50 alias' but only send 10 mails a week and receive 20. Another user could have 1 address and send and receive thousands of mails per week but regardless of how many addresses there are between them that is still only 2 users.

The exact working on our usage limits are found on page 5 here: https://www.symantec.com/content/dam/symantec/docs/eulas/service-description/email-security-cloud-2017-11-service-description-en.pdf

Please note that this is how Symantec defines usage however I cannot commment on third parties such as resellers but I think that should help.
