  • 1.  Mac Address Query

    Hi,

In relation to MAC Address querys by default, when running a report in Altiris will it pull back the MAC addresses that the device is using at that particular time? We're using the MAC address as the Asset Tag but i've noticed a few discrepancies when running the report and comparing it to the Mac address it's showing on some devices a few weeks ago.

    Any ideas?

    Many thanks,

    GOC.

It's most likely pulling this from Inv_AeX_AC_TCPIP.  You could check the query's SQL to know for sure.  To know what's causing the issue, we'd have to know 1) what table is the query using in order to return MAC address in the report and 2) what is the "it's showing" where you see different MAC addresses?

This could be problematic to use the MAC address...it can be changed, and may be reported differently, particularly on laptops, since the laptop has probably a wireless and wired MAC address.  The Agent will report back all MAC addresses for each NIC on the machine.

If possible it is preferable to use the system serial number for Asset management (unless you're dealing with a lot of "white box" PCs vs. HP/Dell/Lenovo-branded PCs).

Ken is correct. If you base the Asset off the Mac, there would be the issue of multiple Macs for a notebook and desktops with Wireless NIC's. Serial# would be a better for Asset type reports.
