  • 1.  Migrating to SEP from SAV

    Posted Dec 11, 2009 11:52 AM
Have a quick question that I guess I am confused on.  I have a secondary server in SAV ver 10,
which i want to upgrade to SEP 11.  I copied the install package down, and that should make
it a SEP client instead of a SAV server.  Once that's done, though, my old clients won't be able
to get their updates from there.  So I must be missing something.  I seem to be in a catch 22.
We don't want to upgrade the clients first, because then they will have to go all the way up
here to get their updates, rather than in WV where they are.  And if I upgrade the server first,
then the clients will lose their updates altogether until we can update all the clients to SEP.
We have 1 secondary server in WV, and about 14 clients that i want to upgrade to SEP and
    a GUP.
    Please help me.  Thanks.

    Greetings,

Here is what you should do:

-Get the Endpoint Protection Manager installed somewhere (You can install this on the secondary server if you wish)
-Start deploying SEP clients so they will report into this Endpoint Manager.
-Once you get all of your clients upgraded and pointing to the SEPM, upgrade your secondary servers to SEP clients

This will ensure every will continue to get updates regardless of how long it takes to ugprade.

If you choose to install the SEPM to a machine with the SAV server, please ensure you remove the following items from the machine first:

    Alert Management Server
    Reporting Server
    Reporting Agent
    Symantec System Center

Upgrade all the clients first ..temporarily assign the role of a GUP to any client..XP is enough to handle 14 clients.
In SEP the SEPM acta as a manage. You can have SEPM and SAV secondary server on the same machine.

Once the clients are upgraded upgrade Secondary server to SEP and make it a GUP.

GUP is no diffrent than a normal SEP user except he handles 1 extra jobit won't affect the performance.

Thank you all so much!  It's terrific to know that any client can act as a GUP.
I didn't realize that...Thank you all for solving this.  I already have SEPM
installed, and our primary server clients all upgraded.  I guess I just was
confused on how to do the clients/server in WV, and we also have one
in Houston, now I can do that the same way.  Thanks!
