  • 1.  Migration to new Site Server

    Posted Oct 13, 2014 03:54 AM

    Hi All ,

I am in the phase of testing upgrade of  SMP to 7.5 SP1 HF3. And before upgrade i am planning on moving/migrating my existing site server to a new environment .

The main reason for the migration is due to low disk space . I use deployment solutions and store multiple images in my site server

Any suggestions for the new server setup ??

Also recommendation on migrating the existing packages and settings to the new server ..

    Thank You All in Advance

    Regards ,

    SVR

It's good practice to have a separate Data drive (e.g. D:), install the Symantec Management Agent to D:\Program files.

Once you've bilt your new Site Server and installed the Symantec Management Agent make sure you have all the Site Server pre reqs installed, .Net, IIS etc.

Use Site Management to add the new server a a Site Server, you might need to wait for Basic Inventory to be processed and the relevant Filters to update so the NS knows it's eligible to be a Task and Package Server.

Once it's installed Task and Package Services and reported back you'll need to make sure all your Packages are set to use it.

Then I'd wait a few days for the Packages to replicate and to test it works.

Once you are happy you can use Site Management to remove the old Site Server. You could move it to a dummy empty site for a few days first so most Task Agents still using it have time to move across.

Yes, once you're happy it's working for both Tasks and Packages.

    Thanks Andykn101 ,

I have another question . I haven't decided where to place my new site server .

Will there be any issues if we assign a dynamic IP address to the new site server ? .

Old site server use  static IP

Provided your DNS works properly I can't think of any specific problems but it's not something I've ver risked before so won't have come across any problems if there are any.

    Hi SVR,

Can you mark Andy's posts as the solution here. He's been very thorough!

Just to add though: Dynamic IPs for servers are unusual in the enterprise, and I would not recommend you go this way. First and foremost, fixed IPs are best for security wrt firewall configurations. Also, a great deal of application stacks do not support dynamic IPs.

PXE has two issues with roaming IP. First the service is IP binded as noted in the tech article and has to be reconfigured every time the IP changes. Secondly, a PXE server is essentially a DHCP server. If your environment uses IP helpers on the switches, your IP roaming will result in your server not recieving client traffic. Everytime it changes IP, you'll also need to re-configure IP helper address to maintain server operation.
