I am having the exact same issue as described by OP at following URL:
http://www.symantec.com/connect/forums/pgp-wde-restore-mbr-or-get-data-encrypted-disk
In summary, we are using Symantec Endpoint Encryption Ver 11.0.1 (Build 7342)
The computer may have had a disk encryption process get interrupted.
In troubleshooting the computer not booting, I did a fixmbr.
Unfortunately, the Bootrec /fixmbr command now presents upon next bootup an error of:
“missing operating system”
One of the suggestions in hyperlink from above says to do the following.
“Attach the drive to another system and use the pgpwde --recover command like this:
cmd
c:\program files\pgp corporation\pgp desktop\pgpwde --recover --disk 1 -p "passphrase here"
Obviously change disk 1 to disk 0 or disk 2 depending on what drive number the target disk you are trying to recover is attached to the system as.”
A couple questions regarding this.
-
The windows path as stated above does not exist.
The path(s) that do exist are : a. C:\Program Files\Symantec\Endpoint Encryption Clients\Drive Encryption b. C:\Program Files\Symantec\Endpoint Encryption Clients\Management Agent
…but neither of these directories contains the pgpwde executable. (probably cause we have a different version installed.
2 What is/does “passphrase” refer to?
Question number 1. What command should I use instead?
Question number 2. When I use command prompt to change to the attached drive in question, I
get error of “ not a recognized file system” (This may be the bigger issue. The hard drive isnt even seen during a Windows repair
function. ) ie I have tried the steps as outline in technote 126257, but in each case, the hard drive in question is not recognized.
