  • 1.  Missing Operating System on encrypted disk

I am having the exact same issue as described by OP at following URL:

    http://www.symantec.com/connect/forums/pgp-wde-restore-mbr-or-get-data-encrypted-disk

In summary, we are using Symantec Endpoint Encryption Ver 11.0.1 (Build 7342)

The computer may have had a disk encryption process get interrupted.

In troubleshooting the computer not booting, I did a fixmbr.

Unfortunately, the Bootrec /fixmbr command now presents upon next bootup an error of:

     “missing operating system”

One of the suggestions in hyperlink  from above says to do the following.

“Attach the drive to another system and use the pgpwde --recover command like this:

    cmd

    c:\program files\pgp corporation\pgp desktop\pgpwde --recover --disk 1 -p "passphrase here"

Obviously change disk 1 to disk 0 or disk 2 depending on what drive number the target disk you are trying to recover is attached to the system as.”

    A couple questions regarding this.

    1. The windows path as stated above does not exist.

      The path(s) that do exist are :                                                                                                                                                                                           a.  C:\Program Files\Symantec\Endpoint Encryption Clients\Drive Encryption                                                                                                                 b.  C:\Program Files\Symantec\Endpoint Encryption Clients\Management Agent

…but neither of these directories contains the pgpwde executable. (probably cause we have a different version installed.

2    What is/does “passphrase” refer to?

Question number 1.       What command should I use instead?

Question number 2.       When  I use command prompt to change to the attached drive in question, I

get error of “ not a recognized file system” (This may be the bigger issue. The hard drive isnt even seen during a Windows repair

function. ) ie I have tried the steps as outline in technote 126257, but in each case, the hard drive in question is not recognized.

    Hi,

The product you are using is Symantec Endpoint Encryption 11.0 however the recovery process you have tried is for Symantec Encryption Desktop (PGP). These are 2 different encryption solutions from Symantec Corporation.

Attaching the drive to another machine will give you a “Unrecognized file system” error, the only option for recovery will be to use WinPE to decrypt the drive.

Passphrase is similar to a password in usage, but is generally longer for added security, and is normally not a dictionary or a known word/fact about the user.

    Thank you for your reply.

It answers this posted question. Unfortunately, my problem remains. I will create a new post regarding boot with recovery CD still dsnt let me "command prompt in" to the C:\ drive. Thanks.
