MR4 MP2 upgrade to RU5 failed. SEPM service will not start

  • 1.  MR4 MP2 upgrade to RU5 failed. SEPM service will not start

I just upgraded to RU5 from MR4 MP2 and the services won't start after the install.  The error is "Could Not start the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manger service on local computer. Error 1067: the process terminated unexpectedly"

I tried to do a repiar right away  then it couldn't start because the file SemSvc.exe wasn't there, so i had to do another repair to fix that, but the original error happened again.

Any ideas of what i should try? Is uninstalling and reinstalling fresh then restoring the DB an option?

     try running upgrade.bat from
     Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\bin

Still doesn't fix try rebooting the server once.

If you have a old backup with you then you can follow the disaster recovery process

If possible, backup your database before running the upgrade.bat.
The Upgrade.bat file will 'upgrade' your database to MR5 -- but if you can't get the SEPM to start afterwards then MR4 will not be able to communicate to the DB because it's been modified for MR5. If you have the needed Disaster Recovery information, you can restore client communication -- even without yor database.

On a 64bit machine, the upgrade process (from MR4 to RU5) doesn't continue after the install and the service can't start.
    Please help.

    Hi Kavin & K1200RS,

Did you stop the SEPM service before upgrading the console to RU5?

Also, please check the upgrade.log in SEPM\tomcat\logs .

    Best,
    Aniket

    Hi.

    Checked the C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\tomcat\logs\upgrade.log
A lot vent well, but in the end …

    Starting console on Windows ...
    Run command:  C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\tomcat\..\bin\sesm.bat
    Export folder is not valid.

Where should sesm.bat be located, in the path, there is \..\ is that right?

    Regards GWD

    Hi,

The error "export folder is not valid" is generic, and is present even in the successful upgrades as well.

but, just to make sure of it, can you post the complete upgrade.log in this post?
