Need to create span error

  • 1.  Need to create span error

Trying to create an image of a new Windows 10 PC. Booting from flash drive. Launch Ghost ver 12. Before it gets to 1% complete it says "ghost needs to create a new image span". I have tried saving the GHO to a flash drive and a USB external drive. Both are NTFS and have more than enough space. What can I do?

    Elric,

Which version of Ghost are you using? There was an issue in GSS 3.1 MP3 Build 8050 where this error would occur. I would suggest migrating to MP5 release if you are not currently on that.

Alternatively, what type of external drive are you using (ssd etc...)? Brand Name?

Another topic to check... you mention the drives are NTFS, make sure permissions are set correctly on drive.

Ghost ver 12. On a bootable flash drive. There are no drive permissions. They are just USB drives and are booted to the RAM only OS. Not sure what it is. I'm not very savvy with Ghost.

    Elric,

Ghost 12 is an old version and is end of life, as such the drivers likely are not present for newer hardware, including newer usb3.0/2.0 flash drives. I would try a combination of different drives to see if you can find one to work.

For what it's worth, a few years ago I was backing up Ghost images to an NTFS USB hard disk using Ghost 2003 and getting single large GHO files without any issues with span errors. I was booting WinPE 2.x

Check your machine and use USB-2 devices with a USB-2 port on the PC, as this normally avoids any issues with USB drivers.

If you are booting WinPE 5 or Win PE 10, check that you can see the source drive correctly. If not, you will need to find a SATA chipset driver for your machine, and you can load it dynamically using DRVLOAD (path to driver INF file) from the WinPE command line.

If you are DOS booting the flash drive - forget it, it's never going to work with modern hardware.

After some looking it looks like Ghost 15 is the last version and is not compatible with Windows 10? Is there a replacement?

Edit. The only option is Norton Ghost Enterprise which is too spendy for us. I will look at other solutions.

    Elric,

Ghost Standard Tools also supports Windows 10. This comes with the boot disc creator, ghost explorer and ghostcast server components.

You should be able to select "mark as solution" from the actions menu on the relevant post.
