  • 1.  Need help to configure NS...

    Hi,

I am trying to implement a Test Lab with NS 6 for the first time.... My architecture includes 4 VMs

    1. Domain Controller (DC) - Win Server 2003 SP2
    2. NS / SQL 2000 SP4 with MSDE on same box - Win Server 2003 SP2... NS and SQL are installed on same drive as I have not created any separate partitions
    3. 2 Client XP SP3 Machines

I have created a domain named MOON.LOCAL and have connected 3 other machines (NS and 2 XP machines) on same domain.

NS 6 is installed and below solutions as well:
    1. SP3 + R12 update
    2. SWD 6.1
    3. Task Server 6.1
    4. Altiris console 6.5
    5. AD Connector 6.1

DC has been assigned a static IP and DHCP and DNS are enabled on same.

XP machines get IP from DHCP automatically when they are turned on.

Machines are listed in AD and 2 domain user accounts are created and listed in AD.

I need help on below 2 issues:

ISSUE 1: Unable to collect machines via AD Import or either discovery methods for Altiris agent installation using NS on both client machines. I have tried below 2 scenarios and got same issue:

    Scenario 1:
When I give a static IP to NS, AD import rules (to collect all machines and users from AD) runs fine, but no machines are collected / listed in the collection "All ...... computers require Altiris Agent install" under Altiris Agent Rollout in Configuration tab.

Here, XP machines are online and are able to ping NS and DC.

    Scenario 2:
When selected to obtain IP automatically for NS, it gets the IP from DHCP which is listed in DHCP. However, AD Import rule fails.

Also, XP machines and DC are able to ping each other and NS.... however, though NS is able to ping DC but its not pinging XP Machines....

I feel the issue is something related to network where in NS is not able to find XP machines...

To Confirm, I have verfied ALL MACHINES are on same domain and are connected as I am able to login with domain user accounts

I have tried to look for logs but was unable to find any clue on this....

    ISSUE 2:
As mentioned above, I have installed SWD 6.1... as per my understanding once I install SWD and pre-requisites, I should be allowed to create Software Delivery Packages under Resources Tab -> Resource Management -> Resources -> Packages (I have created a folder to save packages)... here, when I right click on Packages and go to new.. I do not have an option to create new package...

    What would be the reason?

Please, any help on above issues would be great...

    Thanks in advance...

A few of things to check.

    1. If you do an ipconfig from the server and workstations, do you get the same DNS servers and suffixes?
    2. Are you able to ping the computers via hostname or just by IP address?
    3. There is a delay between import and processing.  If you manually update the collection after a few minutes, do the computers appear?  (With only a handful of computers, this probably shoudn't take long.)
    4. The import is successful, do the logs indicate how many devices imported?

    Hi Buzz,

    Thanks for the reply....

Sorry if my question is very basic...

for # 3: When you say manually update collection, do you mean by manually running AD Import policy... if yes, I have tried that but no machines updated in Scenario 1 even if it was successful and in Scenario 2 it failed... If no, do mean by adding machines to a collection manually and see if it reflects in the collection ?

for # 4: Would I get the AD Import logs at the same location as other logs in NS.. i.e. C:\Program Files\Altiris\Altiris Agent\Logs or I will get these at some other location...

    Hi,

I guess issue 1 seems to be fixed... We realized that firewall was enabled and i guess that was blocking it...

Once firewall is disabled, was able to find machines in NS and I was able to create a collection by adding those machines...

I am now left with Issue 2.... Option to create software package is still not available... right digging around with rights and logs.. still no luck..

Any info/help on this would be great...

Have you check the create package privilege.

    Hi Guys,

Thanks a ton for helping me out in this and Apologies for a delay in response.

I have finally implemented an Altiris 6 test lab which is performing as expected. After working on user accounts I found there are many more things which were not letting NS to perform well. So planned to redo everything.

Few things I had to make sure,
Simple File Sharing should be disabled.
    FTP disabled.
World Wide Web Services and IIS in under Application Server in Add / Remove Windows Components should be checked.
Then reinstalled all solutions and updates.

Thanks again for helping me in this.

    Regards,
    snm
