  • 1.  NetBIOS and SAV

    Hello,

    We have about 2000 machines with various versions of SAV (including 8, 9, and 10.x) across more than 24 subnets (same LAN).  Manage through SSC without any problem.

    Since SAV works with NetBIOS and we had many subnets so we were using WINS.  Administrators wish to retire WINS from the network.

    Already started slowly and have moved about 900 machines to SEP, but still we have about 2000 with SAV.  What are our options as we know SAV need to work across subnets with NetBIOS resolution.

    Sincerely thanks!

    DNS will work with SAV.

    Hello,

    I am testing it and client is not getting definitions from the server.  Server is on different subnet than client, and each subnet has set of DNS servers.  All the DNS servers on both subnet are in an AD domain.  I can not even ping by host name,

    All entries in GRC.DAT use UNC naming convention for the server, like

    AlertDirectory=S\\SAV-SERVER\VPALERT$
    RemoteHomeDirectory=S\\SAV-SERVER\VPHOME
    etc.....

    Many of our clients and sav servers are not in domain, and they were relying on WINS to resolve SAV server name and similarly server was relying on WINS to resolve clients name....

    How clients and server will resolve, when they are not part of AD, just by server/clients UNC name.  Is there anything I will have to do on DNS servers since all server and clients use them in anyway...since WINS will be gone....

    Sincerely thanks!

    Hello,

    I don't think it is related to EOL on SAV v9,  I mentioned sav v8, v9, 10, etc. to make aware that there are some clients with sav8 or sav9.  The testing I am doing is with SAV,v10.1.9.9000.

    Sincerely thanks!

    If the server is not able to contact the client then there is NO way it will work..
    So DNS should be able to resolve the SAV server name on the clients and you should be able to ping by name..
    Name resolution is critical in server-client communication.

    Hello,

    The problem is that my servers and many of clients are not in AD domain, and hence do not have fully qualified DNS names.  They have been working so far with WINS to reolve each others UNC names.   When WINS disappear, how do can I achive similar functionality using DNS so that existing 2000 can be managed?  Is there any changes that needs to be done on DNS servers so that they resolve UNC name without joining those machines to domain.  Please advise!

    Thank you!

    Since you do not have a AD then you can do it from your Router/Switch. They would support DNS. You can defined domain name in that.

    We do have AD domain, but may of the machines are not part of it.....

    For SAV client/server communication,  how do we resolve their UNC naming through DNS and/or router.  Please advise!

    Sincerely,

    Since you have AD so most of your clients will be able to communicate using DNS..Update the DNS server info in your router/Switch if they get the DNS name automatically..if everything is manually assigned then all clients need to be assigned with the DNS information in order to be able to communicate to other servers in your network.
