Old Emails got garbled after placing Brightmail 6.1 Anti-Spam on Exchange Server 2003

We have SBS 2003 on HP Proliant. We installed Brightmail 6.1 Anti-Spam on May 29, 2010. All previous emails in user's .pst files as well as on there Inbox (also attachments) are garbled and unable to read, but any new email is just fine. It is extremely important for us to have our old emails and attachment legible. Any suggestions? We did some security updates for SBS 2003 at the same time. Microsoft is adament that it is Brightmail issue.

    Buck,

I'm sorry to say that Brightmail does not scan the filesystem for emails or interact with your mail stores in any way.  As you can see form the Administration guide Brightmail is an Event Sync into IIS.

If you need I would suggest calling into support and arranging a conference call with Microsoft but to be honest the Adminstration Guide is fairly clear that SBAS/SBMF is and event sync.
