    Hi,
Currently we have about 100 Dell Optiplex 755 running endpoint protection and they are all experiencing random restarts.  I have looked on google and seen that this is a known issue with endpoint protection and these systems.  Does anyone know what casues the random restarts?  All are running Windows XP Service Pack 3.
    Is this a known issue?

    Another possible cause:

The same behavior of random reboots has been determined also to be caused by a known issue with faulty optical drives.   You can test the optical drive solution by disconnecting the power and data cables to your optical drives to see if the problem goes away. This particular optical drive problem was with model HLDS GSA-H73N using firmware C107.

Contact Dell support for replacement optical drives.

In one case for a customer of mine, it was the optical drives themselves that caused the issue.  physically disconnecting them solved the reboots.

Called Dell, and they replaced all of them!  All 150+ of them.

Since then, I'd hope a firmware or driver fixed the issue, as noted above.

This issue only started to appear after the systems were upgraded to Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.  So how does this relate to Endpoint Protection?

I'm not sure how it relates to SEP. I searched the Dell forums and found a few threads started by users having the same issue as you.

    Update the SymEvent drivers

    Updating the Symevent files

To prevent this problem, the recommendation is to install the SymEvent drivers before installing SEP

Something with this model Dell and SEP 11 (no matter what patch version) is the common denominator.

I know it's odd, and hard to fathom, but it's a known issue that has affected my customer with Dell replacing some 150+ optical drives about 4 weeks ago.  It was expensive to support from our side, and I'm sure expensive from Dell's standpoint too.
