  • 1.  Patch delivery task never starts

    Hey all.

I wonder if there is anyone out there who can help me with one thing.

I have been testing out Patch Management in CMS 7 SP2 and I am a bit confused.

No matter what I do I cannot deliver a patch to one of my test machines. I have properly configured everything from software update policys to pmimport donwloads. Staging also works like a charm but when I try to deliver one patch or several to applicable systems nothing happens. The policy doesn't appear anywhere on the clients no matter what I do. I have checked the clients logs and there is absolutelly no trace of the policys that will deliver some patches.

My conclusion, for some reason the policy never hits the clients so the error must be on the server side.

Unfortunatelly there is nNothing in the server logs and when I look at the reports they only tell me that my policys are "Not executed" and "Installation incomplete"....not shit sherlock ;/

Both server and clients have been restarted. Windows XP on the clients.

Anyone who can shed some light over this?

    Cheers,

    Patrik

    *** Small update ***

After more than 4 hours (!!!) the patches I deployed were installed on the clients. I have checked the scheduled tasks on the Altiris server for a clue on what triggered the update cycle without any luck.

Just for fun I created one more software update task with the same run ASAP and override maintenance windows policy but no luck. Nothing happens. Should be interesting to see tomorrow if the new patch is installed and how long it took.

    Over and out...

Ps. Still need help with this...

The default patch inventory rule scanning is 4 hours by default.  It's possible that the inventory data hadn't been collected yet, and therefore Altiris didn't know who needed what patches.

I agree with mclemson; NS still is not a "right now" tool (though Task integration goes a long way towards that...)  If the Agent hadn't posted basic inventory that is has Patch installed, then the NS doesn't know that it should give it Patch-related policies, which means there is no Patch inventory information in the database, which means that the machine doesn't fall into any patch-deployment intersection collections, so it doesn't get any Patch installation tasks assigned to it! :)

    Thanks for both your answers.

I will definitelly look into if the patch inventory was run or not when I reach the site today but that doesn't explain why my third attempt, after the first two succesful ones, didn't fire off.

I will check in later and post some updates.

    Chers for now.

You might want to consider running the patch inventory scan manually.... when I say manually I mean using Task Server of course.

The command you need is as follows:

    C:\Program Files\Altiris\Altiris Agent\Agents\PatchMgmtAgent\AexPatchUtil.exe /I

This is handy when you want to patch a recently deployed machine but don't want to wait the default 4 hours for the patch inventory to run.
