Just curious if anyone out there is having the same problem we are with Patch Management.  Since we upgraded on 5/14 I've had to run through the repair process outline in Tech Article 157445 to repair\replace corrupt XML files related to Microsoft and Adobe.  It seems that something, presumably a weekly scheduled task, is causing the corruption and then patch management is essentially useless until it's repaired and the XML files are replaced.  I've opened tickets with support and they can't confirm if the problem is slated to be fixed with SP1 or not or even if the problem has been identified.  We're running on a clean install of SMP 7.1 on a server spec'ed to the Symantec's requirements.

Am I on an island here or is anyone else having the same problem?

I'm not seeing this issue, and while nothing comes to mind for additional steps, it is an issue that support isn't escalating your issue.  I would consider asking to speak to the duty manager in order to escalate the incident.  Support should provide you with a fix or a workaround, not a runaround.

    Hi wizardtech,

Thank you for posting you comment.

I would appreciate if could help me and answer on the following questions. I’m just trying to get better understanding what might cause this issue in your environment.

    • You mentioned weekly scheduled task in your initial comment. Does it mean you are observing this issue on weekly basis?
    • Do you remember if there something unusual was done in Console prior Adobe/Microsoft XMLs are corrupted. I understand this incident took a place more than month ago and this is hard to say at the moment what has been done, but any information might be very useful
    • Do you have inventory plug-in installed on the agents? If yes then did you run full inventory?

Also please let me know if there is anything you think might be helpful in order to understand the cause.

    Thank you,

    Dmitri

  • The first time the problem occurred was on 5/16 which was the Monday after we went live with NS7.1.  I ran through the steps to replace the XML files which corrected the problem.  The following week (5/23), the problem resurfaced when I noticed that the Patch Remediation center was blank.  I opened a support ticket, spoke to a tech who said they would get back to me.  After a week (5/30), I ran through the XML replacement steps again which corrected the problem and the case was closed.  I did nothing with patch management until 6/13 in preparation for using it for production.  I found that I was unable to create software tasks for already downloaded patches so I ran through the XML replacement steps again and was then able to create the tasks and enable them.  I was out the week of 6/20 but, as of now, the Patch Remediation Center appears to be normal and I was able to successfully create a patch task.  So, for the past 2 weeks (6/20 and 6/27) there has not been any corruption (yet).

Nothing unusual that I can recall.  The server is brand new with the OS loaded from scratch as well as SMP and Patch Management.

  • Yes, inventory plug-in is installed on our agents and yes, we did run a full inventory.
