  • 1.  Peer/GhostCasting connection terminated

    Posted Aug 08, 2006 01:39 PM
    Hi, I'm trying to clone an HP 8230 notebook, I've done this successfully in the past with no problems. I recently had an employee who's LCD screen went out on his, so I successfully created an image from his current notebook, but when trying to clone this on another HP 8230 (exact model and everything), I am getting an error when its in the virtual partition. It gets to the point where it looks like its going to start copying all the data and then exits and says error 33000 ghostcasting connection terminated by the client.

    The ghost version is 8.0, my machine is running XP SP2 and trying to ghost to a current XP notebook. Below is the error log that it creates. Any thoughts? Thanks.

    One other thing to add is when it exits it reboots into PC-DOS mode, so the only way to get the machine to boot back up is bu doing an F8 when entering PC-DOS mode.

    I've also just tried cloning onto another identical notebook that we have with the same error, then I tried changing the image to clone from to one that I've used in the past and still have the issue. So I'm not sure if this is a problem on my console server or something with the connection between the 2.

    Any help would be great. Thanks again.

    That's an odd one, for sure.

    What's not clear to me about this specific error number is which layer of the system to explore. This doesn't directly indicate a low-level protocol disconnect (i.e., a network-layer fault), but one at the layer above where the Ghost client and GhostSrv are exchanging commands. In all honesty I haven't seen this particular issue myself before, and that makes me very curious :-).

    I need to check to see what relevant diagnostics we can get from the client side, but from the server side if you can get a packet capture that covers the connection I would be interested in analysing it. Unfortunately there isn't a built-in logging option that can recover the high-level command sequence on the GhostSrv side but I do have the ability to recover some of that data from a packet capture.

    In the meantime, I'd be tempted to try using a USB hard disk enclosure, a DVD-based image, or a mapped network drive (along with a manual Ghost boot CD). But finding the root cause of the problem is interesting, especially if it's occurring with other images.

    If you can get hold of WireShark from http://www.wireshark.org or a similar tool (like Netmon) and obtain a network capture that's the next stage in diagnosis. Drop me a line at my personal e-mail address (my full name separated by a dot, at gmail.com) and we can take this further.

    I've just spent some time discussing this with a colleague more familiar than I with the imaging application... first off, he pointed me at this part of the stack trace:

    > remoteComm::recvCommand 2
    > remoteMasterDeviceCommand::DoOpen
    > deviceCommand::Open
    > MCastRemoteComm::switchReadModes

    which explains where the high-level command sequence is at (which reduces the need for a network trace, although I'd still be interested in one). In his experience the root cause for this tends to be an internal conflict between the low-level disk access code and the network driver, usually over hardware interrupts.

    This kind of interrupt conflict is the kind of thing the "-noide" switch works around; by disabling the internal IDE driver and using the BIOS driver instead, the conflict is avoided.

    There seem to be a number of sub-models in this part of the Pavilion range and there may be some value in us trying to obtain one of the specific model you have. If you can give us the full model number we'll explore that, and perhaps whether there are BIOS settings that may allow this to be worked around.

    I recieved this same error this morning: Peer/GhostCasting connection terminated, error 33000.

    After googling away to my hearts content, and coming away empty handed, we began looking at our Ghost server.

    Turns out we have two NIC's on this machine, and someone had enabled & plugged in the second NIC without informing me. The error went away as soon as the second NIC was disabled, and we commenced Ghosting. I hope this helps you!
