  • 1.  PGP Error: "Could Not Open Default Key Rings"

    Posted Sep 06, 2011 07:13 PM

I'm using PGP (Ver 8.1) on a windows XP laptop for file encryption/decryption for over 2 years without any issues.

All of the sudden, after I select the file to encrypt,  I'm getting an error message:

"Could Not Open Default Key Rings. Another application might have them open?".

I have no other application open. I also tried to reboot the PC. No success.

    Any clues?

It seems so long ago that I last used PGP 8.x, but I believe this still applies: right click on All Keys in PGP Desktop, select Properties, and make sure the keyring path is correct.

Thank you for the advise. I do not have the PGP desktop, just the PGPmail and PGPkeys.

I checked the PGPkeys options/files path and change it to where the 'pubring' and 'secring' files are. For some reason I can't explain this was pointing to a directory I don't even have...

Now it seems that it lets me encrypt/decrypt from withing the program, but if I double-click on a PGP file to decrypt it, it comes with an error "Found no PGP information in these file(s)".

If I choose the Decrypt botton from the PGPmail menu, and select the same file, it works OK.

Any clue what else could be wrong?

Thank you so much for you time!

    GAbriela.

PGP 8.1 is over 7 years old.  It does not have Win XP SP3 support, so even if you don't have SP3 installed, some other more recent Win XP update could possibly be the problem.

The other thought that I  have is related to the licensing which I don't have a clear recall of.  If you go to About PGP Desktop and hit the License button, does it show that the licensing includes PGP Zip?  I think you will have to hover over PGP Zip (in 8.1) to find out.  If PGP Zip is not showing as part of the license, that would seem to expain the problem.
