  • 1.  PGP WDE - Encrypt only the BootCamp partition.

    Posted May 16, 2012 02:28 AM

I have two partitions on my SSD, one with OS X Lion and one with Windows 7 in a bootcamp partition. How can I encrypt only the bootcamp partition? The PGP Desktop for Mac has only option to encrpt the whole drive (both MAC + Windows partition). PGP Desktop for Windows has the option to encrypt only a partition rather then the whole drive but if I try to encrypt the bootcamp partition from Windows I get an error regarding unrecognised partition type...

    This can help

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH163970
    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH148982

You can also try to encrypt from mac,  using pgpwde --encrypt --disk 0 --partition 0 (or whatever it should be)

i believe pgpwde is located  /Applications/PGP.app/Contents/Resources/

Tks for your reply Julian. The problem is that I don't want to play with my date... I need a sure/test answer because I don't think that im asking something to rare/difficult... I have a drive with two partition, one with Lion, one with Windows 7. I want to encrypt the Windows 7 partition....

You said "if I try to encrypt the bootcamp partition from Windows I get an error regarding unrecognised partition type..."

what happens if you try to encrypt the WINDOWS partition from WINDOWS itself?

Boot Camp is called the Windows partition from a Mac. So when I try to encrypt the Windows partition (Boot Camp) in Windows it says: "This disk cannot be encrypted because an incompatible partition was detected."

    Any tips?

Check that your disk and partition style is supported:

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH149276

    If need help:

    Run cmd,

    diskpart

    select disk 0

    select partition 1

    detail volume

    Send results

the link you sent me is wrong

the commands you gave me are also wrong:

    DISKPART> select disk 0

Disk 0 is now the selected disk.

    DISKPART> select partition 1

Partition 1 is now the selected partition.

    DISKPART> detail volume

    There is no volume selected.
Please select a volume and try again.

Does anybody know how to encrypt only one partition of a dual boot machine?

This is how it's designed you have to encrypt both partitions while using bootcamp. You cannot encrypt the drive from inside Windows. This is because of the way that the EFI works on the mac combined with limitations of PGP Desktop on the Mac (we don't currently support EFI in Windows) so it has to be done this way for it work correctly.
