I am using lenovo T400 TP.My whole disk encrypted with PGP WDE version 10.1.2.My laptop felt down after that everything hanged .Then I shut down and restart after that I got blue screen.I think some segment of hard disk crashed.I used PGP Recovery Disk and one screen came with "Press any key to continue". I pressed enter button after that I pressed 'D' to decrypt hard disk.I got screen Decrypting boot disk, please wait. From last 20 hrs its showing 100% remains encrypted:please wait for completion.

I have very important data on my laptop and I don't have data back-up.

Please help me on this and thanks in advance.

    Regards,

    Rakesh

I just made this response to your other post - glad to see that you have already started it as a new thread.

Don't worry about that showing of 100% remaining.  It happened to me for my last use of the WDE recovery CD, and it did finally show as completed, with the disk functioning as it should.  Be aware that once you start the CD decyption that you must not stop it before it completes - it will give a message about being complete when it is finished.  The CD processing is only 16 bit and quite slow.  On this rather high end machine, it took five days to decrypt my 700 GB disk.

Were you able to resolve this?

I have a PGP Desktop for MAC 10.2.

    750GB drive.

After last week's Lion update, my computer will not boot (Prohibited sign displays).  Other people identified that this was an issue w/ PGP Desktop working w/ Lion.

    I initiated the CD decryption:

    - Monday 11pm: started.

    - Tuesday 7am: the progress indicator showed 65%.

    - Tuesday 11am:the progress indicator still shows 65%.

I hear the HD spinning and read that I should not interrupt the process.  Should I just trust that the decryption is still working?

Sometimes the progress indicator stops showing the progress that is actually being made.  Let it continue running.

    Thanks for your reply Tom.

Is there a way to estimate the total time needed based on the disk size and speed?

(note that I pressed "D" instead of "any key to continue".

It's variable based on machine components, particularly disk size.  On this fairly high end Windows machine, it takes about five days for the Recovery CD decryption of the 700GB disk.

    Thanks Tom -

    I'm on a 2012 MBP w/ 8GB RAM and 750GB 7200rpm drive.

Still stuck at 65% after 36 hours.  I'll keep it running.

This machine I'm on once showed 99% the whole time, but completed the decryption successfully.  I suspect that in a few days all will be well.

I have seen some customers reporting that on 10.2 (prior to 10.2 MP3HF1 - Build 2401) encryption and decryption is slow on newer 2011 macbook pro's and macbook air models as well as new i5/i7 PC's.  This was fixed with 10.2 MP3 HF1. But if you are using the recovery CD, I would expect anywhere from 3-5 days to decrypt a 500 GB+ disk drive.

    As a side note:

It's always better to try and use target disk mode and decrypt with another mac. Or use the recovery CD to boot the OS and decrypt that way. I have this documented in a KB on known issues with the 10.7.3 update for Mac OS X. See this KB article here for those details on the workaround - under the Solution (to prevent you from needing to decrypt from the recovery CD in some cases).

Hi Tom - Just checking in...

I'm now just an hour away from 6.5 days - still at 65%.

Sorry to hear it hasn't completed yet, but suspect it will within a  couple days. What processor do you have?  Mine has an i7 960.

    I've got:

  • 2.2GHz  quad-core Intel Core i7 processor with 6MB shared L3 cache;

  • 8GB (two 4GB SO-DIMMs) of 1333MHz DDR3 memory

My better processor might be the difference.

I'm probably looking at 7 1/4 days.  I'll keep it going for another day and report back.

    I'm now at Day 9.

I'm starting to have crazy thoughts of giving up... If I do, will only 65% of the drive be recovered and accessible?  Or is it all or nothing?

Sure can't blame you for having the thought of giving up, but if you can hold out, I'd suggest waiting a little longer.  When using the Recovery CD for decryption it is considered to be all or nothing.  I am aware of one or two people reporting that they stopped the decryption before completion, and were later able to use the WDE Recovery CD to start decryption again that led to successful complete decryption.  So although I would consider the data lost if you stop at this point, there might be a slight chance this would not be so.

I gave up... and restarted the machin, this time selecting the the "press any key to continue" option.  My machine booted successfully.

Now I need to figure out what to do next to ensure I don't need the CD each time.... more to come.

Re-read the technote and restarted the machine w/o the CD.  Restarted fine.
