  • 1.  Possible reason of CPU spike on specific time frame?

    Posted Feb 01, 2017 02:51 AM

    Hey guys,

I noticed that we're hitting 75% of CPU usage at around 4:00PM every day. I checked around the settings and I can't find any setting that is supposed to run at 4:00pm everyday. It was kinda disturbing because we we can't access the PGP server for quite some time until we we forced to ssh and restart the services. Our backups are scheduled at 11:00pm every other day so I'm not sure what I'm missing. We're using Server Key Mode as recommended by Symantec on our specific scenario with key renewal every 2 months. So I dont think that's the issue either. Anything else that you guys might now?

    Thank you,

Do you have multiple servers set up in a cluster?  Replication traffic could be building up throughout the day and reaching a critical state around the same time every day if the servers are under-resourced, or if that is a particularly high traffic time of day for the server(s).

Are you processing mail?  Do you have any bulk mail pass thorugh the server around that time?  That could also be a factor.

    Hi Mike,

No, our PGP Server is a stand alone one. Also it only function as a full disk encryption server so no mailing related encryptions, which I assume it only process key management of the encrypted drives and data like hostnames, usernames, email and disk details.

    Thank you,

I got it, we're maxing out the ram, and whenever the ram is exhausted the CPU starts to spike. We never experienced the problem after ram upgrade. Thanks.
