We are running SEPM version 11.4000.2295.
We ordered new Vista machines which come with pre-installed unmanaged Symantec 10.X.
We pushed SEP client from SEPM 11.4000.2295 on top of Symantec 10.x vista machines and Proactive Threat Protection shows updating.
Is upgrading from Symantec10.x unmanaged client supported?

The ans to your question is Yes and no

When we install SEP over SAV  it first uninstalls SAV and then installs  SEP. This is done in the background.

So actually it is not an upgrade from SAV to SEP  but a new install of SEP

It says Proactive Threat Protection shows updating(Waiting for updates...), it doesn't mean that it is updating from SAV10. And if that PTP is not updating definitions from SEPM or even after running Liveupdate on that client, Please remove Proactive Threat Protection in Add/remove programs by selecting modify option. And reinstall it back in the same way.

    Create  the registry  value

    Under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\SERVICES\SmcService  added Multi String Value  “DependOnService”,  with  Data  as “SENS” .
    Rebooted the machine .

    Jmadiwale:

Why do I need to uninstall Proactive Threat Protection and install it again. That means I'll have to visit hundreds of machines and manualy execute this process.
Is there no clean way of doing it?

As you have mentioned that there is no Green Dots on the clients, that means there is no communication between the SEPM and the SEP clients. Obviously Clients won't update their definitions from the SEPM. That means if you fix the Communication issue. This will be fixed.
On the SEP client, under help and support, and Troubleshooting, does it say server offline?
If Yes, please try the following Link to test communication-

This is a know problem, if you search the forums you will find many posts with the same issue.

    - You can try running "luall" from the CMD line, this fixes it most of the time.
    - Uninstall and reinstall liveupdate.
    - As a last resort, you can do what jmadiwale says or simply reinstall the client.
