  • 1.  Problem with SEP installation on a fresh and up-to-date XP machbine

    Hello,

After completely updating a fresh WinXP with SP3 and all updates up to the end of support I am trying to install SEP unmanaged client. All versions (12.1.1, 12.1.4, 12.1.6) after being installed and ypdated cause WindowsXP to not allow access to external disks ("local disk"), some applications do not start due to being "not a valid Win32 application", some icons in the control panel are missing or do not execute correctly. After uninstalling ANY of the above SEP versions, everything works great and smooth! Is this a known issue and can this be resolved?

    Thanks in advance,

What if you install with the AV component only?

This could be caused by a misconfigured application and device control policy or system lockdown.

To verify, follow the below steps on the affected machine to remove the Application and Device control feature through add or remove programs and then check if the issue persists.

Add/Remove programs -> Select SEP -> Change -> Next -> Modify -> Deselect "Application and Device control" and complete the installation.

Hello Seyad and thank you for the prompt response!

The modification failed and now it can neither be repiared nor it can be removed or restored. Please send me the CleanWipe tool for version 12.1.6128.6000. Anyway, the external disk showd up accessible, so I am an optimist .

I use this opportunity to ask you regarding the nature of this component (Application and Device Control). Does it in anyway compromise the overall "firewall functionality" of the SEP, or are only ALREADY INSTALLED/PRESENT apps/devices affected by it?

Thanking you in advance, I look forward to the cleanwipe tool version 12.1.6128.6000,

    R

Unfortunately, no good news. I restored the fresh XPsp3 from an image. Installed the SEP 12.1.4 (for which I have to cleanwipe tool) WITHOUT the "Application and Devices Control" component... - disks cannot install in the OS, applications cannot be started due to their "DLL is not a valid windows image", or "application is not valid Win32...".

Is there a way for this to be diagnozed or need I forget Symantec and look for an alternative? I am sick and tired as I'va wasted a week of time I didn't have.

    Please advice,

    SOLVED! (kind of :))

It was the SONAR aftrerall. I suspected the proactive protection immediately, but disabling the sonar did not work. However, uninstalling it is a releif from the pain :))))

IBeside disabling it, I had also tried forcing him PROMPT me instead of BLOCK apps/devices silently, but at no avail.

No the question is who is the culprit - WinXP or SEP?

.... Sadly, after woking for almost whole working day (with several resets/turnoffs), the problem appeared again. If you have no ideas you are welcome... :)

Uninstall SEP client and monitor the PC for a day (or two) to confirm that SEP is causing the issue. If confirmed to be caused by SEP, I would suggest contacting Tech support for further help.

I would definitely start with the SEP, no option to tackle the WindowsXPsp3. However, tech.support requires legal "numbers" I do not have. Would I be allowed to cotact them?

I have downloaded and run the SymHelp tool and the system appeared to be clean. I than run it after a problematic SEP 12.1.4 installation (SEP could not start its firewall) and only reported the installation fauilure.
