  • 1.  Proper Way To Update Software and Policy

    Hello all,

I have a software resource setup in Altiris 7.6.  We then setup a policy that will check to see if a system has the software and if not will push the software and install.  Very straight forward setup.  My question is what is the best way to update the software package to a new version.  When I import the Software I see there is two options.  1 Create new software resource or 2 Update an Existing Resource.  If I update the resource will that also update the policy?  Or should I create a new resource and a brand new software deployment policy?  Thanks so much for the help.At the end of the day just want to make sure this new version is checked for and installed.

You should definitely create a new resource. Each Software Resource is an Inventory item as well as it can contain a delivery item. So you should be careful about your detection rules as if a Detection rule evaluates True Inventory will say that software exists on that PC.

So if you use the same Software Resource for two different versions of software your Inventory will get mixed up.

"Update existing resource" is for where you are packaging a piece of software that Inventory has already discovered and created a Software Resource for so you are just adding a package, programs and detection rule to it.
