  • 1.  Protection Center database is down

    Posted Dec 23, 2009 05:29 PM
I just got an email from the Protection Center stating the database is down. Here is the text of the email:

    Server name: servername

    Server IP: serverIP

    <o p=""> </o>

The Symantec Protection Center database has gone down and needs immediate attention.

I attempted to log into the Protection Center and I can't get in. I tried using the forgot password filed and it says the Admin account doesn't exist. I searched around this formu before and didn't find anything that worked. I tried stopping and starting the services again aswell as restarting the computer. Neither helped fix the issue.

Just before I got the email, another employee installed a Cisco VPN client on the server. The server is Windows 2003 Standard.

Plese advise on the next steps I should take.

    Thanks

whats the error message you get when you try to log in ?
failed to connect to the server?
    try uninstalling the vpn client
do a repair of the protection center from add/ remove programs
    try logging in again...

    Hi,
Database gone down may have many problems, here is a few suggestions based on my experience.
maybe first you can check the database services is started(if is MS SQL, then make sure all services of SQL server is started)
Can't found admin account maybe because database is offline or damaged, maybe you should run the reset database wizard located in the start menu, this usually fix the problem but you "maybe"  lose your data in the original database.
Also here is some information about cisco VPN Client 5.0.06(newest) from cisco, http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/vpn_client/cisco_vpn_client/vpn_client5006/release/notes/vpnclient5006.html#wp63537
and I just noticed that the software doesn't support Windows 2003, so very possible that this problem is caused by it.
Hope these will help, Best Regards
    Michael

When I try and log in I just get an incorrect username or password error. I removed the VPN client and ran the repair. Verified that all of ther Symantec Services and SQL services are running and I still can't get it. After all of this I got a second database is down email.

I don't know how to "reset" the database, but I did attempt to use the restore function and recieved this error when trying (Every Symantec Services was stopped):

A connection to the database could not be obtained.
    Restore cannot be  performed.
