  • 1.  Proxy error with Altiris SIM and Symantec Management platform, all the same correctly working from a browser

    Posted Mar 20, 2014 06:21 AM

    We got a curious error,

    • The proxy name could not be resolved: 'http'

when running SIM, and if not provided http:// in front of proxy settings http://myproxy.mydomain.com, SIM does a popup requesting the proxy again. So we have to provide full http URL for proxy settings...

All the same we got issue, SIM reports not accessing Internet, all the same using any browser with the same install account, we are able to access all symantec.com or solutionssam.com files and manual download them...

    full message:

GetHttpFileInfo - The name resolver service could not resolve the proxy host name.

The Proxy settings for SIM and for ITMS itself (including patch) are separate so these are two different issues.

As you discovered, the proxy settings for SIM can be found under settings.  The proxy server name should not contain http:// it should be just the proxy server name.  You must also specify the port, username, and password in the spaces provided.  You must have had this working at some point or you wouldn't have been able to install any products.

The proxy settings used by Patch are configured within the console under Settings, All Settings, Notification Server, Notification Server Settings.  On the proxy tab.  On this screen you do need to specify the proxy server as http://proxyname:port.  This screen has the added benefit of a test button so once you enter the credentials, you can test to ensure they work.

Since you are getting a 407 return, it means your proxy is requesting authentication and SMP is unable to negotiate authentication properly with your proxy server.  If you can't get that working, another option is to configure your proxy to allow access to the problem URLs (e.g. solutionsam.com, symantec.com) without requiring proxy authentication.

Hi Joel, thanks a lot your input. We do remove the http in front of, but SIM does request a popup to correct the proxy. So I believe the authentication is failing, all the same we do try the pwd and use it from browser without any issue...

And this is also the second problem for patch, as err 407 same way... Why browser able to access, and SIM & SMP not, is strange.

So if we were adding the http, we can get access on SIM, because no access Internet. But if we provide correct proxy name without 'http', we can't open SIM, because cycle asking for a credential, we already check multiple time, is correct. :(

    We try with:

    DOMAIN\userid

    or

    userid@mydomain.com

we got the same issue, error 407, like a bad authentication.

Which kind of authentication Altiris is doing, that wrong vs the authentication we are setting from IE8 ?

Are you also finding that the account being used in the proxy settings is being locked out when you try and use it with SIM?
