  • 1.  Pushing and Pulling an Image across the network Using Ghost Suite 2.0

I work for a local college and im charge of cloning and setting up the labs. I started to use the Ghost solution suite 2.0 more and more for deployment of images, but what i have ran into it is that when i push or pull an image across the network it basically puts the entire network to a crawl at which time i usually get a call from the network admin screaming what are you doing to the network.

My questions are how can i push or pull an image from a lab to a new set of machines say 15-25 machines without killing the network, I would like to also do the same to autoinstall software packages, Do i need to set the network transfer protocol to unicast, multicast or directional? will that help any ?

    thanks
    Mike

To the first part of your question:

In the task under the "Network" tab you can change the throughput speed of your sessions"  You need to check "Data Throughput Limit" and then set a value for it like 50 or 100MB/min.  You will have to expirment to see what keeps the network admin off your back.

I dont use their autoinstaller so perhaps someone else can help you with that.

I decided to call tech support and the agent told me to use the unicast and would limit the bandwidth traffic which it did tremedously, but the problem now is that i am pushing an image to 25 other machines and its going to take 9 hrs and the image is only 14 gigs, is there something else i can do that will speed this up without causing the bandwidth chatter throughout the network that was causing the initial slowdowns?

    thanks Again

I used to have that problem. Even when unicasting the network turned into rush our traffic.

The problem disappeared as magic when I replaced an 802.11b (Lucent/HP) wireless access point with a simple one from D-Link (no I did not have any GSS clients on the WLAN). I don't necessarily mean that you should remove all WLAN stuff but there might be other (old?) network gear that are poor in handling these "floods".
