  • 1.  PXE & TFTP errors when connecting to a Ghost cast session

    Posted Apr 06, 2009 09:32 AM
    Hello all,

I setup a "TCP/IP Netowrk Boot Image" that uses WinPE to call up a ghostcast seesion with the -ja=download -sure -rb switches.  This appears to be working properly, although I cannot see the actual result because I'm getting PXE and TFTP errors before the imaging takes place.  It shows that a connection is trying to be made to my ghostcast session called download,  but that's as far as I get.

I'm getting the following PXE and TFTP errors and I'm wondering if anyone else has seen these and has a solution.

"TFTP receiving data failed. WSARecvFrom return code 10054" and "receive error 10054" from the PXE server.

    thanks in advance,

    Mark

What antivirus softwrae are you running? I have seen this before whan an AV program was interfering. Post what AV you are using, and I will make a recommendation.

It could also be that the support files that are generated along with the WIM image are in the wrong folder according to your config setup for your PXE server.  What I did was point the pxeboot.n12 location to the folder just above the WIM file location using the BootPTab editor.  Once that was done I just copied all the support files to both locations.  It's only a few MBs so I didn't care about having multiple files in different locations so long as the WIM file was only in one location.  The support files I'm talking about are the bcd, boot.sdi, bootmgr.exe, bootptab, and pxeboot.n12 files.  Once I had them in all the correct locations then everything worked like a dream.

    Thanks for your quick replies.

Randall, we're using Mcafee 8.5i.  I'm putting in a request to have it neutered on my Ghostcast server to see if that's the problem  Have you you heard of this antivirus causing problems?

Jonathon, Thank you for your suggestion, but I still got the same error.  I'm keeping your solution in place for the time being though.

    thanks again,

    Mark

You have your TFTP settings pointed to the parent folder of the "boot" folder that actually contains the WIM file and the PXE settings pointed to the same place right?

    Yessir.

I had a Mcafee setting called "Disable IRC Communications" set on my Ghostcast server and that took care of the PXE server error message, but I'm still getting the TFTP server error.   I'm hoping the EPO guy finds a TFTP setting, but I haven't heard back from him about it yet.

I'm just now noticing that you didn't mention which TFTP and PXE services you were using.  Are you using the 3Com PXE boot services?

    Try this article:

PXE error 10054 in the PXE server when McAfee VirusScan is inatalled.

It turns out my Mcafee install was flakey.  The "Disable IRC Communications" should have taken care of everything, but because my install had a problem it also caused errors with the TFTP server.

I am using the 3Com PXE boot services...My appologies for not mentioning that.

Ultimately, the solution to this problem is to set "Disable IRC Communications" for Ghostcast server in your EPO console if you're using Mcafee.
