  • 1.  Question about Symantec PGP products (SEMS / SEEMS)

    Posted Mar 21, 2018 02:14 PM

    Hello All,

I've got a question about Symantec PGP products.
Maybe you can help me with it...

One of our Customers purchased the following licenses:
Symantec endpoint encryption and Symantec PGP File share encryption

Can i manage those with the SEEMS? or should i use the SEMS?

followed that, If i've got an existing (old and unlicensed) SEMS, Can i use it and licensed it or should i install a new SEMS?

    Thank you,
    Shai

PGP clients are managed by SEMS whereas as SEE clients are managed by SEEMS. See this KB article:

Brian, Wow, you'r quick :) First of all, thank you for your answer...

So if i understand correctly, i'll need 2 servers for those 2 products/licenses? is that correct?

Yes, the licensing is different between the two - each are a separate product.

    Hello again :)

As i understand it, the following two products supposed to have different capabilities

    SEMS -

Gateway Email Encryption - provides automatic email encryption in the gateway
Desktop Email Encryption - provides encryption at the desktop for mail and files.
Drive Encryption - provides encryption at the desktop for an entire disk.
File Share Encryption - provides transparent file encryption and sharing among desktops.

    SEEMS -

Endpoint Encryption - provides strong full-disk and removable media encryption (with centralized management)

My question is, do we have a reason to work with both servers? I can encrypt a "full disk" (by partition) with the SEMS so why should i use also the SEEMS?

Thank you all for your thoughs and answers....

If your requirements are for both disk encryption and for FileShare encyption, then I'd implement the SEMS to do both.

SEE is only recommended in envionrments where your requirements are for Disk and Removeable Media Encryption, only.  It's worth noting though, that SEE tends to get more rapid updates, and is generally better able to handle changes in OS, whereas SED (the client component of SEMS) lags behind slightly.
