Quick and dirty - how to deploy a non-SATA image to a SATA machine

I've spent hours tweaking and getting our company image just right.
I have been making multiple images as I progressed, so can go back to any point and re-tweak.
I'm using Windows XP SP3, updated with all recent patches.  I'm also using DriverPacks to make the image as hardware independent as I can.

I have ONE laptop that doesn't have the option in the BIOS of setting the SATA HD to compatibility mode, and don't want to have to rebuild everything for that one piece of hardware, so here's my question.

I know I can step back and try putting the MassStorageDrivers in to DriverPacks prior to re-ghosting, but it's not an easy process to track down all the hardware IDs and get them into the appropriate place in Sysprep.inf.

What I'd like to know is this:

On one of my working laptops, can I just install the drivers for the SATA hardware in the non-working laptop and ghost machine-to-machine?
If that's the case I can be done and have this up and running in 15 minutes...so I may try it anyway as it's worth the time.
I can always re-ghost the machine I compromise the drivers on.
So I really guess the question is this.  Can I install drivers into a Windows XP setup for hardware that doesn't exist on that system?

(if anyone else has a better (ie quicker, easier) solution, please feel free)

    Thank you, a priori.

You can no longer 'inject' drivers into the mass storage, so even if they were present on the image, if they are registered, it won't work properly.

So, my suggestion, follow the steps in Brandon's article and for further reinforcement read Vortex0007's article on building images.
