  • 1.  Rename Altiris Notification and SEP Server

    Posted Jul 29, 2011 08:11 AM

    Dear All,

in near future we will have to migrate our current environment to new VM´s. As of new naming conventions I will have to rename
our SEP as well as our Notification server, IP adresses will stay the same. My question is in how far I will have to expect problems
or maybe there is a process out for that action. In addition I will need to migrate the SQL server as well - also a new name.

I was wondering if Aliases in DNS would help to work around!?

We are on Altiris NS 7.0.8641 and SEP Server 11.0.6200.754.

I didn´t find any clue so far in existing posts.

Thanks a lot for any feedback.

    Kind regards,
    Jörg

    1) A DNS alias would work

    2) If you use a DNS alias or simply change the name, remember to REDIRECT the clients to the new address BEFORE renaming the system. This is done by going to the advanced tab of each of the targeted agent settings, checking the box to use a different address and put the new name there.

Wait until you know all machines should have checked in (reasonably), or you will have to rediscover and\or reinstall the agent on the 'lost' systems.

Renaming the server depends on a few the things. Start here - renaming the Server. There are caveats if SQL is onbox or off, but that link has links to that particular situation.

For the client side, you'll have to get a new sylink.xml to the clients, there are multiple ways to do this.

    1) Use the "sylink dropper" tool

    2) Script a stop SMC \ replace sylink.xml \ start SMC process.

The security sforums for endpoint protection have many articles as well as tips and tricks for this procedure.
