  • 1.  Replicating parts of the Organizational Views?

I am still relatively new to SMP and CMS and hope there is an easy solution for my conundrum...

Currently I am looking into a method to replicate what is in the Active Directory Domains Organizational View to separate it into 2 sectors - Primary Schools and Secondary Schools.  I would like to do this for deployment reasons as the Primary Sector has different core requirements to the Secondary Sector.

I like how the 117 domains come up in this with the entire OU structure which separates computers into their rooms they belong to as each room has an OU assigned to it.  So I am looking for the easiest way possible to replicate this but split it into 2 Organizational Views 1 with 105 Primary School Organizational Groups and 1 with 16 Secondary School Organizational Groups.  I also want to complicate things a little further as some of the schools are thru schools i.e. they are a Primary and Secondary school joined together under the single AD domain, hence why the number of domains to do not reflect the total number of schools.  These schools could be seperated by targeting which rooms (OU) the workstations belong to.

I have read that you can create automation filters but I am getting stuck on where to go to replicate what is already in place (to some degree) in the Active Directory Domains Organizational View.  Or maybe I am looking in the wrong place and maybe should not use Organizational Views to do this and instead use just filters and targets, please help me?

Organizational views are for security.  If you won't use this to secure the resources, I'd recommend going about it a different way.  For example, could you write a filter that targets the resources/OUs from different organizational groups as 'Primary', others as 'Secondary', and a third report that looks for resources/OUs that are neither Primary nor Secondary (exception report)?  You could then use filters as the targets of your deployments.

Thanks fo the quick reply Mike,

I see where you are going with this, I assume you mean the "Resources included in this filter" option inside the Filter Query Builder?

Although I do want to configure security at some point I suppose this can be done at the Active Directory Domains Organizational View.

However, I would still like a method of taking what is implemented in one Organizational View and replicate parts of this into other Organizational views with ease. Including the ability to add automation to ammend the changes that happen within the schools AD to the custom Organizational View (like how the Import Microsoft Active Directory rules do).

    Cheers,

    Chris
