I have Symantec Client Firewall version 8.7.4.117 and Symantec AntiVirus version 10.1.7.7000.  When I'm not running anything, my Rtvscan.exe program is using 214,496K of memory.  This seems ridiculously high, especially considering other posts which put a high of 100 MB on what this number should be.  What steps should I take to reduce this?  Or if not possible to reduce it, what is causing it to be so high?  I am currently running no other active applications other than iexplorer, and my process list has nothing ambiguous in it.  Full virus scans have revealed no viruses and everything is up to date.

See this post from Prachand for a possible solution -

Moving this thread to the Endpoint Protection forum.

    Cycletech,

Your solution does not solve the issue. Rtv scan is taking 214,268k of my computer's memory and all the registry keys are there. It seems Symantec has this issue for years and you guys are just ignoring it. Even when I disable it, it still keeps the memory usage in the same level. Looks like a memory leak to me.

I suggest you open a support case for this issue. You should consider upgrading to SEP 11, as SAV is no longer sold and is nearing EOL support.

    I agree  with Cycletech.

You're also on an old version of SAV. I believe the latest is 10.1.9 but as Cycletech said, you need to seriously consider moving to SEP.

Lowly end user here. Old Dell Pentium 4 (2.26 Ghz, 2 G RAM) running WinXP Pro v.2002 service pack 3, with SEP v. 11.0.6200.754 , most recent viral/spyware def update r. 52 1/27/11, most recent proactive threat def update r. 8 1/28/11, most recent network threat def update r. 1 1/27/11.

Same problem (?) as described for earlier versions of SAP enterprise client version. rtvscan.exe has a regular spike of activity up to 100% CPU use, preventing other programs from functioning for significant percentage of time. The spikes occur every 13 seconds, spike duration 5 seconds, spike is not a flat wave, duration of 100% CPU usage is less than 1 second, but the CPU usage is above 80% for 3 seconds. Also showing a minor blip at the same time is ccSvcHst.exe.

I am worried that the computer could overheat - heat sink fan is on 100% of time. IT can be maddeningly slow at times - I am searching for fixes in the meantime.

RTVSCAN uses 100% of CPU for 5-60 minutes
    Fix ID: 1879071
Symptom: Rtvscan.exe may consume 100% of available CPU for a period of 5-60 minutes. The issue is intermittent.
Solution: Rtvscan.exe was modified to prevent a case where the IDB processing logic could get into a loop, consuming all CPU.

So you're saying that Symantec is defective, they won't fix it, and I should upgrade to another Symantec product?  What kind of sense does that make!!  Looks like it's time to change AV Vendors.

the link provided by Symantec Employee suggest the issue been  fixed in SAV release MR 10, as you are using the older version, upgrade is required.

I admit I am using an old Symantec version - 9.0.0 - but I have been running Symantec for years upgrading as I went with no problems. Generally no matter what I had running rtvscan.exe would take up about 50-60K at the most and usually after initial start up settle down to around a reasonable 30K.

Now as soon as I open just firefox and outlook rtvscan.exe goes pretty rapidly up to to over 200K.

As far as I know I have not installed anything new recently to cause this beyond the normal Symantec updates.

I have checked the NavLogon.dll solution - that is all as it should be and has been for years

It seems surprising that this should be hitting so many people at this time.

I can understand companies not supporting old products but it seems difficult to understand how you could not know what is causing this. Just being pedantic with an "upgrade your product" appears to be a company stance rather than a support or service one. You must know people will start to look around for other anti-virus vendors. Don't you care?

With that logic, you might as well abandon the IT field altogether. EVERYTHING has bugs which is why they're addressed through patches, new releases, etc.

By trial and error I have worked out the problem is when Symantec checks my email in Microsoft Outlook.

Rtvscan.exe is sitting using a constant 60KB ( too much for nothing going on but ... ). When I start Outlook as the emails come in the memory rtvscan uses goes up fairly rapidly to a ceiling of around 208KB and stays there.

I would say it is a memory leak but that does not quite ring true as it gets no further than this 208KB figure.

Maybe this is an upper limit Symantec holds itself to.

Even after I shut Outlook down the rtvscan.exe process still sits at the same figure. So the memory is not being released back to the system - this does sound like a memory leak.

If Symantec Tech Support does decide to investigate this maybe this will help.

We are using Symantec Antivirus Corporate 10.1.9.9000 in our office and we are also facing this issue on all client machines.

Currently on my pc only firefox is running and not outlook and other programs are running but rtvscan.exe is still getting 205,012K memory and CPU usage is 0%.

I think there is something wrong with Symantc Antivirus that is why it is getting too much memory.

    Zafar,

As I stated earlier, SAV is near End-of-Life. You should start thinking about your migration to a new product, such as SEP11, SEP12, or the Endpoint Protection.cloud product.

    SEP11 - http://www.symantec.com/business/products/sysreq.jsp?pcid=pcat_info_risk_comp&pvid=endpt_prot_1

    SEP12 SBE - http://www.symantec.com/business/endpoint-protection-small-business-edition

    .cloud - http://bit.ly/endpoint-protection-cloud

Let me know if you need more information.

    Best,

    Thomas

    Hi,

I've been suffering the memory usage problem for ages and i've used google and checked various forums for an answer and cannot find anything to help.

I'm running 10.1.5.5000 and have the same problem as above. I have located the navlogon.dll file and it is in the right place in the registry and has been before and after I started having this problem.

Please can you help me resolve the memory usage problem - I've read in various threads that SAV is nearing the end of its support life, so I do plan on upgrading... just not yet. If this product is still being supported, please can you help me resolve this issue. I have a 2gb machine running an AMD 64bit chip on windows xp pro, sp3. Please let me know if you need more information to help me resolve this!!

    Please can you help?!

    Thanks in advance!
