  • 1.  sem5.log grows huge and fills entire disk!

    Posted Jul 07, 2014 06:15 PM

I'm trying to find a fix or reason why sem5.log file is growing to a massive size and there is no stopping it until I run a process to recreate that file.

The version is 12.1.4023.4080 , I downloaded this just a month ago and deployed it for a customer.  Never had such issues at other customers with older versions.

    thanks!

This was an issue in previous versions but has since been fixed. You may want to give support a call to troubleshoot.

According to this article, https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/articles/what-are-symantec-endpoint-protection-sep-versions-released-officialy , I'm on version 12.1 RU4a.  I will upgrade to RU4a MP1a.  Very confusing with these sub versions.

There were a couple vulnerabilitesi found so symantec put out fixes for the SEPM which came in versions with "a"

The latest is RU4 MP1a so you're a version behind. I would upgrade and see if that fixes it.

fix notes for it can be found here:

    Hi,

If you're using Enterprise Edition, just ensure that the database maintenance tasks are activated. Indeed you can run at the same occasion the truncate of the sem5.log in the same places.

Admin/ Servers/ Point to localhost and you'll have the quick shortcut tasks to shrink the sem5.log. By going on edit Database properties, you could check the boxes for automatic truncation of the database log transaction file and the rebuild of the indexes.

In addition as you faced a disk space issue for a certain amount of time, you can also involve our support to ensure your conf.properties has not been altered by the disk space issue (known side effect when it happens).

    Kind regards,

    A. Wesker

I found the maintenance tasks you are talking about.  I can run them manually, but when I go schedule them, nothing happens when I click on the schedule button or OK button.

Contacted tech support, being in India, the dude called me at 6pm while I was having dinner.  I will wake them up from north american this morning to see if it can be resolved.

I should add that I upgraded to the latest yesterday, 12.1.4 RU4 MP1a.

What I don't understand is that I did not have to schedule any sort of maintenance tasks in the past with previous versions and this database thing is causing problems for the 2 customers where I installed the product.
